Apple Watch Issues: Forgotten passcode unable to remedy

I forgot my watch passcode which has not been an issue because I typically have my phone with me. This morning I did the watch IOS update and then it was insisting on the passcode. I found the Apple instructions for resetting the watch and restoring it from my phone. Through the process I got an error message on my phone that the watch reset failed. My Apple Watch app insists I should re-pair by putting the watch face in a camera window, nothing happens. When I pick the “pair Manually” option it tells me to press the “i” button on my watch to get it’s name, can’t do watch it Locked. Tried pressing and holding side button on my watch to power off and I only get an intermittent apple logo. I am stuck! Any suggestions appreciated!
