why do I keep getting an authentication error on my icloud app? I can't access icloud

I have recently started to have problems with my devices not backing up overnight. I haven't changed any settings to cause this to happen. Now I can't access the icloud log in on my laptop and the icloud app keeps giving me the message "An error has occurred in authentication. Please try again." I need to back up my work. Any ideas? I've already tried deinstalling and reinstalling the icloud app.
