I'm editing a music video in Final Cut Pro. The DP shot it widescreen but its meant to be shown in 4:3 (Standard) ratio. In other words, there's "extra" visible area on the wide sides of each shot that we don't want visible. How do I change the ratio and lose the sides of the shots without affecting the resolution of the video?
Make a custom project that's 2880x2160. Set the clips to Fill. The left and right will be cut off. The image resolution will remain the same.
Thanks Tom! Will this adversely affect the quality of the origin video since it changes the resolution? I would still want it to appear UHD in its playback quality but merely having changed the "size" of the frame. Pardon my ignorance and thank you for your help!
It will be uploaded to YouTube and the resolution playback should be as high as 4K but the screen fit would be a 1:33 (4:3) aspect ratio without the black letterbox bars on the sides. Here's one example of what I mean:

I'll look for other examples. I recognize that if the viewer switches to "full screen" watch mode, the letterbox bars will automatically appear to accommodate the aspect ratio (which is fine). But there must be a way to edit within Final Cut Pro and have the frame be at a 4:3 aspect ratio without sacrificing the quality of the video resolution.

To piggyback on my other reply, here's another example where the video does not show the black bars on the sides of the video while retaining a 4:3 aspect ratio despite UHD broadcast resolution:
Make a 4:3 project. Select the 16:9 clips and in the Video inspector change the spatial conform to Fill. When you put them in the project the left and right side will be cropped.
Please give the exact resolution of your media. What resolution output do you want? Where's it going? How are you delivering? Normally all HD and UHD are widescreen, and never 4:3. Only SD is 4:3.
The YouTube version of this video 1440x1080. That's not UHD.
Once again, can you please give the exact specifications of the media that was shot. What is the exact resolution? That's the only way to figure out what you need to do.
The video resolution is 3840 x 2160
