A message just popped up on my iMac saying "Apple wants to make changes. Enter your password." Is this legitimate?

You are smart to be suspicious of messages like this. Although this discussion thread is about one year old, the information in it still applies. The Apple Recommended portion of the thread suggests running MalwareBytes to see if adware may have inadvertently been installed.
