UPDATE: I’ve posted on here a few times, was having the same issue. I went to the apple store tonight, they ran diagnostics and replaced my screen. That resolved the problem. My screen was replaced by a 3rd party before the iOS 13 updates. Seems that the replacement screen hardware is not compatible with iOS 13 (perhaps this is apples way of making you replace screens with apple instead of a 3rd party). Nonetheless that was the source of the problem. They fixed it at no cost. At least they made it right for me. If your having the same issue, go into the apple store. Good luck!

Not sure why just the X, but I don't think I've seen anyone say they have this issue with the original OEM screen from Apple - tons of posts mention that they've had the screen replaced. I just got my X the other day from a friend who had his screen replaced at a little shop at the airport at some point. It was an LCD, not OLED. Can't confirm 100% but it really feels like it has to do with certain aftermarket screens. Obviously Apple can't be faulted for not having tested their software with every third party screen on the market, but hopefully they're able to release an update to address it.

I wanted an OLED screen anyways so I had mine replaced again at the mall (Apple support said they wouldn't replace my screen since it had third party parts - not sure if that's true though).

Still not OEM, but it's working now so it must be only certain aftermarket screens.

I just got the iPhone Xr with iOS 13.1 yesterday and had the same issue. I played around a bit (I'm an experimentalist) and after a few minutes I found the answer. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen like you normally would. But instead of swiping and letting go, keep your finger on the screen for a second or so. The open apps will start to peek in on the left hand side of the screen. When you remove your finger from the screen, all the open apps will move to the center of the screen. You can then swipe up on each open app to delete as normal.

I am having the same issue. If you go to SETTINGS, ACCESSIBILITY, TOUCH and turn ON ASSISTIVE TOUCH. You will be able to switch between apps. Issue is not resolved but at least you can use your phone.

So this circle appears on your screen. Acts as your home button.

You click on it and press the home button to go to your main screen.

you click it, click device, then more, then app switcher. Then you can close apps.

swanniegirl13 knows that. She was not trying to open the control center; she was trying to open the multitasking window, which, on any phone from the X and later you do by swiping UP from the bottom of the screen and holding. And you close an app by swiping up and NOT holding. And it wasn't working on some phones. It's been fixed in iOS 13.2.

Argh, sorry to hear your going through the same thing..but it’s comforting to know I’m not the only one 😬 I spent hours with apple support online...doing updates through iTunes etc nothing worked. Apple told me to go to an Apple store and get them to run a diagnostics test...that it’s a hardware problem possibly! It’s ******** my phone worked perfectly fine before this...I can unlock my phone..just can’t close or switch apps! So I decided to do a full restore and just deal with having to wait for everything to upload again from a backup..and guess what..still didn’t fuckjng work! The interim solution is to add the “home button” it’s a pain in the ***, but it’s a solution for now!! Surely we can’t be the only two people on the planet having identical issues!! Hope you haven’t ur phone yet...I was close

Okay, it’s working for me.

it’s not as smooth as the old iOS, but in any open app, you’ll see a black line at the bottom of your screen.

place your finger on that and draw a backwards 7, bringing your first “leg” of your 7 to at least the middle of the length of the screen.

it’s not smooth, but it works.

mat least, I’m lucky enough that it does for me.

Hi,

I think I answered this below. The trick is, when you’re in an app, use your finger to swipe up from the bottom to the middle of the screen AND (this is important) leave your finger on the screen for a second once it gets to the middle of the screen. Then a set of windows with all the open apps should appear. You can swipe left or right to scroll through them and swipe up to close any of them. That works for me (and is how they explain it in the IOS 13.1 User Guide).

There are several videos on how to downgrade to iOS 12.4.1 but the window for apple to sign this software is closing. If you truly can not deal with this issue you all should look that process up. It has worked for me. The only problem was I had to use an old iOS 12 backup but all my messages were instantly restored upon logging into iCloud account so nothing was lost. Good luck! Took about 20 minutes to complete.
