iPhone: some emails in “All Sent items” showing as unread

On my iPhone I have an IMAP account for yahoo.

when I send an email it is saved in my (yahoo server) [sent] items folder.

It also appears in my iPhone “All Sent Items” folder. However, some messages get marked as unread and others do not have an unread status (as I’d expect in a Sent folder, it’s not my inbox after all).

If if I open the message in my Sent items there is no blue dot.

If I open the same message in my All Sent items there is a blue dot which then vanishes after a short period of time. This then makes the unread status null and the blue dot, and the subsequent unread message count resets.

This behaviour would appear to be a bug. Is there a permanent fix; or a process to reset all unread statuses in the all sent items folder; or a configuration setting that needs to be set?

I have been having this same issue for weeks and all signs are point to it being an Apple issue. I am using a Yahoo IMAP account and, like most, am having any email I send from my Mac, iPhone or iPad using this account end up in the Sent folder as unread. Any mail that originates from Yahoo's online mail app, however, appears in the Sent folder normally as read. I have been working with Apple support for over a week and they believe that there is a setting somewhere in my user profile that is likely causing this. We created a test User Profile on my Mac, sent some test emails and the problem did not occur. This leads them to believe that the issue lies somewhere in a setting or problem within the User Profile - possible as a result of the recent Catalina update. The problem now is that they cannot pinpoint whatever is actually causing this.

The idea of the user profile being the source of the issue is interesting, but that does not explain why the issue happens from Galaxy phones, and from Thunderbird. It might be that there is an option in the user profile which can change this behavior, but I do not believe it is the cause. The root cause I think is in Yahoo, and they must have changed some behavior on their side.

IMO - It should be fixed by Yahoo as they seem to be the only ones affected. If apple introduces a setting to address it, that's only a solution for Apple, but not for everyone else who is affected.

Interesting point. I guess in these times when the norm is for companies to always try to blame someone else (whether correctly or incorrectly) I never thought of that considering the fact that Apple basically said that it must be their issue. I am trying to upload logs from my Mac for their engineers to look at but have not been able to get them to successfully transfer (another issue). If I get something back from them I will post it here.

I have this problem too.

It is especially annoying because I receive notifications for new mail and now I get a notification every time I send a message.

It seemed to start around the time I installed Catalina (Nov 2019) so I assumed it was an Apple problem. But then I logged into a Yahoo Mail account directly from their website (an account that was not set up on Apple Mail) and sent a test message. It immediately appeared in Yahoo’s sent mail folder as unread. So I believe this is a recent Yahoo problem and has nothing to do with Apple.

i am in a windows 10 environment and I have seen a couple of comments that it happened when it begam-for mac users- upon installation of Catalina which leads me to believe it is an apple problem.

Again If i send myself an email from yahoo in the web brows - no problem

but when i send myself an email from ios app then i get two copies in my sent folder

And now I am seeing double sent folder meails when i send to external people as well - bit only when i send from stock apple email.

Apple problem IMHO

even if you disagree, someone has got to step up and take care of this

You mean like the people who posted in this very thread that they have this problem on their Android phone? That was very helpful. And the people who posted that they had the problem using Thunderbird on their computer? Also very helpful. And the people who posted that it only happens with Yahoo and/or AOL, and not with any other email services? Very helpful.
