IOS13 Mail outlook.com duplicate sent items

This has bugged me with MacOS Mail for years, and with iOS13 Mail I now have the problem on the iphone (6s)

I have 4 email accoonts, one icloud account (no problems) and 3 Outlook.com accounts. All 3 now store duplicate sent items in the app.

They are not stored on the server sent folder, and only one copy is received by the recipient.

I have deleted the accounts and added back.

Thete is no setting on webmail to help me.

IOS 11 and 12 did not have this problem though MacOS have had it for years. Its no doubt a Microsoft glitch but only shows up in 13.

Any help, or others testing this would be appreciated.

Wahoo we waited long enough...

  • Fixes issues in Mail that may prevent downloading new messages
  • Addresses an issue that prevented deleting messages in Gmail accounts
  • Resolves issues that could cause incorrect characters to display in messages and duplication of sent messages in Exchange accounts

my battery is 17% lol need to charge before it will allow me to update. Best of luck everyone is this a very merry Christmas from Apple?

First time I laughed about this issue! The problem was a with Apple Mail running Outlook 365 and exchange accounts and perhaps others (I only use those). Emails show up in the sent folder of both accounts twice. However if you open the “top” of the 2 emails in the sent folder the content all appears but then the duplicate disappears from the sent folder. I only use Apple Mail on my iPhone XR running 13.1.3 but this may be occurring on iPads etc. it does not occur using my windows PCs using Outlook desktop as the client. It also does not occur using Outlook mobile on my iPhone or Spark for email.

Also Apple Mail does not appear to synchronize correctly once i access email on my PC-the folders don’t synchronize correctly. For example messages deleted on my iPhone still show in the delete folder on my PC.

Further, emails on my iPhone Mail inbox show only once in the list, but hitting delete doesn’t always delete them and the immediately reappear as a new message. The second delete seems to resolve it.

Lastly in Text message using Apple Messenger we used to be able to click on contact to call send them a text. Now it just opens the phone app or a blank text with no addressee.

they really made a mess of their own products. Blaming Microsoft is not correct.

Interestingly spotted something with this on my device - iPhone SE with o365 exchange and iOS 13.

Initially there was a duplicate sent item - 1 just with the original text and 1 with the text and the server added signature.

When I selected them both to look further then the signature one disappeared.

I wonder if there is a server or 365 side signature manager such as Codetwo which is causing issues?

Just installed the final release of ios 13.2. The issue has not been fixed! I spoke to a support rep, who happened to tell me that he himself used an MS account with the apple mail app on iphone running ios 13. To be fair, he did at least try it on his device during our chat session - he composed and sent a new mail from his phone, and immediately confirmed that there were 2 items in the sent items, and when he clicked on the one at the top, it duly disappeared. However, he couldn't confirm if engineering were looking at it, and just said that hopefully it would be fixed, and that he couldn't escalate it himself.

As well as the duplicate sent items issue, there is another glitch I have noticed: If you receive a new e-mail, click on it to open it and quickly delete it before it is marked as read, nothing happens and you need to delete it again for it to be deleted.

You would think such an obvious and silly glitch as to show duplicate mails in sent items that has come in with ios 13 (was NOT there before) would mean apple and microsoft would investigate, update status in a tech article, and then fix it. It's an apple change that has triggered it, so really the onus is on them - they should at least communcate something.

same here. updated the ios 13 subversions many times. issue now exists on 13.2

its anoing if you will clean up the sent folders and move the items to subfolders and you have to do the work twice.

if you move the wrong mail its never been moved. only one of the mails is realy a mail. the other one is just a "shadow".

and its only on my business account.

the business account is exchange office365. i didn't think the problem is there.

my private account is an imap mail box. this is working fine on the same phone!

the issue was gone in 13.1.2 and now back on 13.2

Disappointing to hear that ios 13.2.2 does not fix. ios 13 apple app with O365/Exchange/outlook.com is just broken. Duplicate sent mails showing, having to delete the same mail twice, and earlier, forward and reply flags not syncing (this latter is fixed I think in ios 13.2, but was an issue earlier).

Given that IOS 12 mail app with MS accounts was rock solid, and given that Outlook app on IOS 13 is also fine, I don't really see how this can be anything other than Apple's responsibility to fix - they can surely work with MS if they need to for technical investigation. IOS 13.2.2 does list a fix for one Exchange specific issue, so clearly there are problems with the IOS 13 mail app when working with MS accounts.

Not sure about AOL, but google mail uses, or at least supports and in some cases can be configured to use (depending in part on whether its free gmail or a paid google account I believe), MS ActiveSync as the mail sync protocol - so it makes sense that that would similarly be affected to MS accounts that use the same protocol. Again, the fact that all of these mail accounts from multiple vendors all developed these issues at the time of the IOS upgrade to 13 suggests Apple changed something (and indeed, IOS 12 mail app with the same accounts are still fine). For me, the new mail app in IOS 13 offers nothing new, other than these issues. If I could keep IOS 13 but revert to the IOS 12 mail app, which worked flawlessly for me, that would be great. Please Apple, no need to innovate here - if the app claims ActiveSync support (which it does, by offering Outlook.com as a clickable option when configuring a new account) then just make it work properly, talking to MS if necessary. Duplicate sent items and having to delete mails twice, are obviously bugs.

This has been going on for a month. I tried numerous fixes to my hotmail email accounts including removing the mail app on my iPhone 6. I had numerous discussions with an Apple tech incl 8 hours on and off one day with him remotely accessing my phone. Issue is definitely a Microsoft vs Apple problem. Acknowledged that when IOS 13.1 was designed fixes that were made didn’t include hotmail. Doesn’t appear to be a problem with gmail and yahoo emails.

I am providing a solution that worked a few years back in the hope that someone intelligent (i.e. not me) can extrapolate a solution. A few years back this exact same issue arose. The solution at that time was to go into Settings>Mail>Accounts then select the problematic account (in this case Exchange), scroll down to Advanced, click on Sent Mailbox (it might say Server) and then unselect Store Sent Messages on Server.

In the current iOS 13, there are no Accounts accessible in Settings>Mail as far as I can tell. However, Settings>Passwords & Accounts is the equivalent, but in the Exchange account>Account>Advanced Settings the only thing I see is Store Drafts on Server, which would not seem to be the issue for duplicate sent items in iOS 13.

Also, I am completely ignorant of the impact of not storing sent items, or drafts, on the server.

Interesting. My problem is different from yours a bit: When I send an email I only get one copy in Sent Items. Then I file it into a folder associated with that account. A duplicate then appears in sent items. I don't actually ever have the two in there at the same time the way you do in the photo.

For the past few days I have also been using Outlook for iOS as a secondary app for my Exchange Account and it works as it should without duplicates. Inconvenient as that workaround may be...

I have had this duplicate e-mail issue since iOS 13, with all updates, including 13.2.3. I also experienced the same as peter_watt in that I can send the very first e-mail after update with no duplicate (false optimism). But all subsequent e-mails are duplicated in SENT folder in the Mail app. Some issues are solved now, such as not having to delete emails twice in the app, and a couple of other minor things corrected.

However, the main issue, DUPLICATE emails in SENT folder remain.

I also want to mention once again that I am not using Outlook.com nor the Outlook app. I am a G-Suite (business) user only and sync with the Mail app due to familiarity and simplicity. Everything was just fine for the past several years, update after update, until iOS 13. So, this is AN APPLE PROBLEM, nothing to do with Outlook! Also, note that my personal e-mail account through Yahoo.com (AT&T) is not affected whatsoever.

Apple needs to address this very annoying issue! This has really gone on long enough.

Although I have updated the software to iOS13.2.3 (and was assured by Apple Support that this would fix the issue) I still get duplicate messages in the Sent folder when I send from Outlook in the Mail App on either my iPad or iPhone! I understand that this is because one copy is stored on the server and the other on the device. Of course I can simply delete one of the two copies on the device from which I’ve sent the message but then risk choosing the “wrong” one (the duplication only happens on the device from which I send, i.e. it only appears once on the other device) such that it gets altogether deleted from the other device. In the long term, this is unsatisfactory and not a solution.

I’ve been on this since the start including spending 8 hours online with an Apple technical supervisor and was eventually told it would be fixed within 2 weeks. To be quite honest I’ve now given up and just delete the 2nd copy sent email when I do a regular clean up of various folders such as junk mail etc

I also had the issue with the wretched unicorns and have the same attitude towards that issue
