iOS 13, Siri making calls on speaker phone by default.

Since updating to iOS 13, I have noticed that when ever I ask Siri to make a phone call for me, the call is placed using speaker phone every time by default. I am not asking to put the call on speaker and I have tried restarting my phone with no luck. Every time I say something like, “Hey Siri, call Jim.” The call is placed and put on speaker phone. I then have to tap to turn speak off, and then continue the call.

I hope this is a bug that Apple is aware of and fixing soon.

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

This is on iPhone XS, iOS 13.0

I'm repeating the workaround fix, I posted below.

  1. Go to Assessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing

There are 3 default choices: "Automatic", "Bluetooth Headset" or "Speaker"

2. Choose "Bluetooth Headset". NOT the default "automatic" - which is broken in iOS13.1

NOTE: I do not use much less own a Bluetooth headset. But it mostly fixes the problem.

If it's like my iPhone 11 Pro, it will be on "automatic" by default - which always got to speaker when using Siri to make a call. But I just tested it using "Bluetooth Headset"., and when I asked Siri to call a number, she responded that she is calling that number using the speaker. But the speaker was OFF. Let that sink in - this a very broken iOS feature.

So, it goes to speaker when it is set to the default "automatic", and doesn't when it is changed to "Bluetooth headset".

I’m having issues with my iPhone XR when telling Siri to call a contact (Bluetooth on in my car) she states “calling [name] on speaker” rather than sending call through the car speakers. This just started happening after the last 13.1.2 update. I can’t figure how to correct this. It’s annoying since while driving the law states it needs to be hands free and I have to try and adjust it to go through the speakers to be hands free!!

Why does Apple think they know what we want? Every release they screw something up on my phone. Now when I ask Siri to call someone she always puts it on speaker. I don’t want it on speaker. I have tried the fix that was put out there but it didn’t work. Can I back a upgrade out? I shouldn’t find my phone works differently than it did before a push. I should get an option of how I want my phone to work. Apple please stop trying to help me. You don’t know me and don’t know how I want my phone to work.

yep, my iPhone X pro is doing the same thing. Updated to 13.1.2 and all Siri requested calls are defaulting to speaker even with headphones in and will not turn off. Every time I try to turn off speaker, it turns itself back on. I have tried changing to bluetooth headset as my default like someone suggested which lets me use my headphones but like others have said, Siri still says the call will go to speaker but comes through headphones. hopefully this is fixed soon. very annoying.

Just the same happens to me. It was a bit annoying, so I look for a solution and I found this interesting thread, well explaining the issue.

Examinated throughly the question, I must admit this is not an issue at all, this is a FEATURE.

It make sense: if you are hands-free, you speak to Siri and you will be on line thru the speakers, hands-free. If you wanto to put the phone at the ear instead, you will pick the phone, keep pushed the home button (no need to call Siri aloud), then tell Siri just the name she has to call. You will go on line by earphone. Simple and intuitive, indeed.

I hope Apple will keep it as it is now.

I called Apple Support today twice about this issue and both reps acted like they never heard of the problem. I mentioned to look in the blog here for many similar complaints. It is not just my phone (obviously!). So frustrated. Told me to go to the Apple store which is a process and a long drive. I don’t have a whole afternoon to spare sitting around the Apple Store!!! Ridiculous!

Out of curiosity, I held the phone to my ear, pressed the Siri button and said "Call my wife" and it rang her phone in the ear speaker, not the speakerphone.

I then held the phone to my ear and said; "Hey Siri, call my wife" and again it rang her phone in the ear speaker, not the speakerphone.

I then held the phone in front of me and said "Hey Siri, call my wife" and it again connected using the ear speaker.

Next I put in my AirPods, tapped the Siri pod and said "Call my wife" and it connected using the AirPods.

Finally, I said "Hey Siri, call my wife on speaker" - it responded "calling your wife on speaker", and it did.

So I have no idea what the problem is with anyone else's phone. Mine works exactly as I would expect.

I called Apple Support again this afternoon. Finally got a rep that knew what was going on. She told me they are aware of the Siri call to phone speaker issue and are working on a fix.

A couple of hours later I made two calls through “hey Siri” and both calls went through radio speakers. Fixed now (I hope) for good!

Thought I would send a quick reply as I’ve been having this issue as well until recently.

I don’t know exactly when it changed but I’m no longer having this issue, and I don’t have the Bluetooth Headset workaround implemented.

I’m running the latest iOS 13.2.3 so it’s possible the issue has been recently corrected.

Hope the same will apply to you guys too.
