Late 2015 iMac 16,1 running super slow and beach balling too often

I have a late 2015 21.5" iMac that has been getting slower and had more spinning beachball.

When I click on email or messages it takes many seconds to load the messages. Apps and processes are quite slow as well with beach balling.

I've considered running the System from an external SSD since the unit is not designed for any upgrades, then the internal HDD as storage, though I fear it's near the end of its life... Is this a viable solution? I am attaching system info via etrecheck pro.

Yes' that is the recommend solution for the 21'5" iMac models that came with a pathetic 5400rpm Hard Drive.
