Cars compatible with CarPlay

I have a new XR

my IPhone 5 was compatible with the hands free on my car.

i cannot connect my new phone.

There's a difference between Bluetooth and CarPlay. Only cars equipped with Apple CarPlay will be able to use CarPlay. If your iPhone 5 could connect via Bluetooth, your iPhone Xr can as well.
