iCloud HEIC upload

I use the iCloud Photo Library and wanted to upload some HEIC images from my Mac to the iCloud via iCloud.com. Unfortunately, all the HEIC pictures are "greyed out" and not selectable in the finder tab that opens to select the pictures. I tried it with safari, firefox and chrome.

When selecting "import" in the photos app on Mac it works but I do not want the pictures marked as imported.

As there a way around this?

Thank you,

Sven

Hello sven114,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. I understand a specific file type is not uploading to iCloud. I'll be happy to explain.

Currently, iCloud supports these file formats under 'File types that you can use with iCloud Photos': Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support

If you're able to, you can try converting or using a format similar with these steps: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support

Best regards.

Hi

I think that this is connected. I am trying to upload images to a forum through safari. I browse to 'photos' and I can only select some of the images in .heic format. All photos were taken with an iPhone 11 pro. I thought it might be because some of the images are 'live' or whatever (where they save live info about the photo (I don't really understand what that is tbh))

Anyways, I am confused about why I can upload some .heic images and not others. I have included a screenshot of the file chooser and as you can see there are only two files in .heic format that I can select. All other .heic formatted pics are not available for selection.

I appreciate you help with this.

what I don't really get is that images 056 and 057 in the screenshot of the file upload were taken moments apart. one photo is of the front and one of the back of my amp. Is there a reason why 'photos' would be treating these two .heic images differently thereby allowing me to select only one of them to upload as a photo from safari (and get automatically converted into a jpg in the process)?

I've also already asked this question on this support forum: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250789751

Even after today's macOS 10.15.3 update I can tell you that it doesn't work. Every update Apple releases I hope it gets fixed, but until now, no luck.

The only way to upload photos is to export them in Photos.app and then when uploading in Safari, select the exported pictures from the Downloads folder.
