I'm sure it's right in front of me but I cannot determine how to do this. Lots of info on removing pictures or adding pictures for an album. I just want to zap the album completely. I'm also pretty sure the pics IN the album stay in my photo library. I have way too many albums cluttering my sideboard. Thanks!

Control-click (or right-click) on the album icon or name in the sidebar to bring up the context menu.
Select "Delete Album" from that context menu.
You are correct that the photos will stay in the library (and any other albums in which they might appear).
