iOS 13 Photos sync through iTunes causes duplicate photos on iOS devices

Since iOS 13, whenever I do an iTunes sync of my iPad (pro) and iPhone, the Photos library on both get filled with duplicates of most, but strangely enough not all of the photos. To get rid of the duplicates, I have to sync the devices with Sync Photos unselected (which sometimes works) or sync to another Mac with an empty Photos Library and then resync in my own account.

Sometimes it takes multiple syncs tries to get rid of superfluous photos on the iOS devices. (Which I also find odd because I have no photos in iCloud and iCloud Photos is switched off on all devices, so a sync to another account should remove all synced photos in one try).

Does anyone else have this issue?

All right guys -

I have been in a remote wilderness since I last posted here, so I took a while to get back to troubleshooting this, but wanted to tell everyone that I fixed this problem today, and it took very little effort!

I figured that the issue had to be with my Photos app on the laptop, and not with the phone, or with the new Finder sync. I have all of my photos (22,000) organized perfectly into folders of where each was taken. All of those folders are in Finder on my mac, and are in Albums in Photos. I sync everything from Photos to my phone (versus syncing directly from the folders in Finder). When I look at each of the 100 or so Albums that I have in Photos (under the Albums>My Albums menu on the left), there are NO DUPLICATES AT ALL in any of the albums. They are all exactly how I wanted them to be on my phone...BUT, when I click on Library>Photos on the left I see thousands of duplicate and triplicate photos. They only appear there, NOT in any of the Albums that I created and thought that I was syncing.

I got this app from the App Store today:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/photos-duplicate-cleaner/id592704001?mt=12&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

And I carefully followed these instructions on how to use it:

https://www.idownloadblog.com/2016/02/15/how-to-remove-duplicate-photos-on-mac/

It found that I had over 22,000 duplicated and triplicated photos. They ONLY show up in the Library>Photos section of Photos though, which is what your phone is using when is syncs.

After deleting all of the duplicates, I synced my phone again and it went from having 47,000 photos on it, to having 22,000. No more duplicates.

Hope this works for the rest of you. This wasn't a macOS Catalina issue, nor was it an iOS issue. It was an issue with Photos having thousands of duplicates, seemingly from me not importing them correctly when I did it.

Problem is (as of many actually) ... 1. I'm not always near a internet network in which to access my photos. 2. I DO NOT want ALL of my photo's on my iPhone/iPad. 3. The $.99 storage will NOT suffice for all of my photos! 4. I have OTHER cloud storage providers where I keep a variety of my files and photo's stored. I do NOT need one more!

This pretty much summed up what I said to my Tier 2 Apple Genius. He said, "I understand PERFECTLY what it is your saying!"

Indeed, I’ve owned many, many Apple products since the ‘80s, but if they can’t be relied upon to assure that the product features they tout actually work, then they’re worthless to me.

That means no new Mac Pro, no new iPhone, no new Apple Watch, and no new Apple TV for me until photo syncing functions as advertised. This feature is critical to my workflow, and I’m done with buying Apple products until “it just works” actually means something again.

Steve Jobs would be ashamed of this, and I’m just disgusted.

I’m running the latest beta — IOS 14 beta 5 that came out yesterday.. it still needs work. I’m missing some photos no matter how many times I force a sync.. Not many mind you but that’s not the point. Also, the Hidden folder handling is not working right either on iPadOS.. The hidden folder is missing if I enable it in the settings app under photos. It shows up on IOS but not iPadOS for some reason. Yes, I provided feedback on this stuff to them..

I’m missing some photos no matter how many times I force a sync.

The missing photos is actually a separate issue. For a possible workaround to that (because it hardly qualifies as a “solution” if it relies upon breaking another bit of functionality), if you’re syncing from a Mac, check to see if the missing photos are also being used as key photos for People. There’s an identified and reported [but apparently unacknowledged by Apple] bug that prevents key photos from being synced to iOS/iPadOS/TVOS devices.

…which, itself, is just infuriating.

I've tried most of this and it still didn't work properly. However I did not delete the photo cache. Where do I find the photo cache? Why did you sync via WiF afterwords? I always sync via cable from iMac to iPad!? My double pictures always appear after syncing from iMac to iPad after I have added new pictures to my iMac photo library via my iPhones.

Hi Fernando, Sorry but after I posted this fixit my ipad started adding additional photos - typically, it behaved all day, about syncs with no problems, then it started to add photos - always with a location ( GPS co-ordinates) so I am guessing that they are being added by the post sync process). I did post an additional comment to let people know it didnt work - but I cannot find where to delete my original post.

I used wifi sync just as an experiment - and it did seem to work - but not for long...lol

The iPod photo cache should be in your photos directory (wherever you tell itunes to get the photos from) it is a hidden file so you will have to have your PC (File Explorer) show hidden files.

Guess What? PHOTO SYNC IS STILL BROKEN!!!

And guess who—pretty much entirely uncharacteristically—doesn’t care about the impending release of the iPhone 12, only because this is still broken?

This guy, right here.

Apple’s negligence in assuring that their basic features actually work as advertised is ultimately going to save me a lot of money, it would seem.
