I updated to iOS 13 and speak screen accessibility feature stopped working correctly

I updated to iOS 13 and speak screen accessibility feature stopped working correctly. The issue began right after I updated to iOS 13. I updated to iOS 13.1, but the issues persists. I use the two finger swipe down to read what's on my screen. I use this feature daily to read stories to me in place of audio books. It takes multiple swipes to make it start reading - it says "No readable content can be found on the screen" despite that fact that there is content. After a few tries it will start reading the text but then it randomly stops after a few paragraphs of text. I've used this feature nearly every single day for the last couple of years and it should read to the end of the document without stopping after reading just a few paragraphs. I have searched for resolutions online, but cannot find anything. The feature worked before I updated the software - though it randomly started reading "..." as "to the power of." I've tried restarting the phone multiple times and turning the feature off and then back on and it still is not working correctly.

Try disabling Reachability (found under Settings/Accessibility/Touch/Reachability). That was interfering with my Speak Screen functionality, and when I disabled (turned off) Reachability, then Speak Screen worked. Does that fix work for you?

The speak screen used to be integrated with the music app before iOS 13. It always had problem with randomly stopping, but at least it pauses when AirPod was removed or an incoming call appears. Now on iOS 13, the speak screen is an application of it own, with same issue unsolved plus new problems. I’ve reported the issue since the initial released of iOS 13 2 months ago. No improvements was made with the latest iOS update.

I'm following up on this a few months later. I needed this feature and I couldn't find any decent apps to do what I needed, so I changed to an Android phone. There's an app that's only available on the Play Store called @Voice that I use now - it is made for reading articles/stories, not for reading the screen for those who are visually impaired. It's very different than the speak screen feature is on iPhone and it took me a while to learn to use it and all it's little in and outs, but it works better for me and my needs than speak screen did.

I don't know if the moderators will allow this comment to stay up, but Apple is clearly not making fixing this issue any kind of priority. If you're dependent on this feature for reading articles/stories and are in a position to do so, I'd recommend changing to an Android and using @Voice. I'm sorry, I don't know a good replacement app for those who are visually impaired.

After I updated to iOS 13 and, very quickly, discovered that Speak Screen, was now completely unreliable, I too contacted Apple, I spoke to increasing “ layers” of Apple Support. All of them said that they had no idea what I was talking about, that it was a complete surprise to them that speak screen was not functioning perfectly.

This leads me to the conclusion that Apple is going through the, ”lie and deny phase”.

Any time in the next year or two they will eventually come to the conclusion that “there’s a problem with those butterfly keys”!

if we just chip away at their armour, hopefully more than a few dozen people will annoy Apple and they’ll, eventually, admit there’s a Speak Screen problem, then get around to fixing it just in time for iOS 20, or more likely iOS 25?

I'm running iOS 13.4 on Apple 11 Pro. Loved this feature on my older iPhones and one of the reasons I came back to iPhone. Now Apple has screwed this feature up. It works for me only in iBboks. Other apps like Kindle or Play Books will only read the first page and the. It stops and crashes. I believe Apple is doing this intentionally to stifle competition.

Have you tried using a different voice? In Settings>Accessibility>Spoken Content>Voices, you can select a variety of voices for usage with speak screen.

If you continue to experience issues, try reaching out to accessibility@apple.com, as they may be able to help get some information that would allow the Apple engineering team to further investigate this.

You're definitely NOT the only one experiencing this issue, karajdaar. They could reproduce the problem if they tried using it in the apps we're complaining about. Were you able to reach them without providing your serial number for your phone? I'm not giving the serial number of my phone to somebody over the phone. There's no good reason that Apple needs that information in order to answer a question about an accessibility feature that should be available and working on all of their phones.

The usual lie and deny from Apple!

i really am beginning to think buying a “premium product” from Apple is an exercise in futility, and a waste of expenditure!

This problem is definitely not limited to you. I know numerous people who have iPhones, who, upon upgrading to iOS 13 have the same problems.

Apple is fast becoming a company with little, if any, integrity.

”There’s nothing wrong with our butterfly keyboards!”
