iPhone photos app curation

iCloud might be interfering, if you are using iCloud Photos on your devices with "Optimize Storage". I noticed that the scanning of the library for face recognition and object recognition takes much longer, if the photos are not stored locally on my iPhone or iPad. After I disabled "Optimize Storage" the scan finished much faster. The curating requires the previous face detection and object recognition. Can you afford to have all photos and videos stored locally on your devices?

So finally I did what you recommended: disabling and re enabling iCloud. After doing that, and let the phone connected to the power, the curation process message has disappeared. In other phones I have seen a message that states “Curation Finished”. What’s your case? :)

The mistake I was making (in case anyone else is doing this) is that they tell you to lock the phone and plug it in. For some reason it did not compute that the process would continue with a progress bar visible if you closed the phone down. So I left it open and it would not progress. I called Apple and after going through two levels of support, I found that out.

On my devices (iPhone 11 Pro and iPad Pro 10.5, approx. 35,000 photos) curation never finished since the initial release of iOS 13.

Updated to 13.2 and it finished nearly instantaneously.

YES - solved!

After upgrading to iOS 13.3, iOS forced to the icloud libary to reload. Than after two days all of my 60.000 photos are donw with curation :-)

How many photos do you have on the iPhone? It may take several days, if your library is large. For my library with 50000 photos the curating has not yet finished on any device. Did you already update iOS 13.1? This will fix some bugs.

Be sure to lock it. When I did that it finished right away. You can put up as many photos you have space for. You can buy more gigs for only 99 cents a month.

Ive turned of iCloud photos and deleted all the photos on my phone and then turned on photos again.

so ill post if anything happens

Im doing this on my old phone so I'm not too worried if anything goes wrong anyways.

As for my new device ill leave photos just curating

I really don't understand how much time does the process take. I have a work mate that installed iOS 13 last Friday and the process was over in less than 2 days.

My guess is that the process is stuck because the iOS Photos App is trying to sync in some way with the OS X Photos App. However, as Catalina has not been released yet, that sync cannot be completed. Do you have a Mac with the Photos app enabled?

Let Photos do its thing with the iPhone locked and connected to power, as the message says below the Photos view. It will be a long wait.

Have been using iOS 13 during the beta test, and there the first curating take more than three weeks. But my library has 50000 photos. After updating to iOS 13.1 it is still curating. I am keeping the iPhone connected to power and locked nearly all the time.

Not sure why anyone would not use iCloud to back up photos. It is so useful and cheap. But I suggest you call Apple support to resolve your problem with the photos. Since it is a new iPhone they would be able to resolve that quite quickly. Especially if you go to a higher level of support.
