iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

Older smartphones had more scratch resistant, but more brittle glass.

Since people don't like paying $300 to replace their glass when dropping their phone a foot, cell phone makers overall (not just Apple) moved to formulas that are more shatter-resistant but are slightly more scratch prone.

This issue is solved with a $20 screen protector; you can't apply something for $20 that will stop your screen from shattering in a fall.

Keys and coins likely WON'T scratch the screen on iPhone. It's material like sand, which is fairly common in the average pants pocket, which can most definitely scratch any glass screen. If you can point to something written where Apple claims iPhone screens cannot be scratched, you'd have something. But at no time did Apple ever claim iPhone screens can't be scratched.

And this article, which has been posted numerous times in this thread aptly explains this --> https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/10/19/17514174/gorilla-glass-scratch-resistance-google-pixel-3-samsung-galaxy-s9-note

Yeah. I can say the same - for me most durable is the phone which looks like new after months of usage. Not after drops. And I think most of people here thought the same. Why should I worry about “most durable phone” - for sure it should be more durable than previous models which I was pretty happy with? Sounds absolutely misleading , don’t you think so? You said you always put protection - so you move using your pattern and previous experience. We did the same. And, oh my friend, we who didn’t use protection glass before, we see there is huge difference with previous models. You just can’t judge as never used the phone in the way we did.

> The recommendation for AppleCare+ would have solved a few things, including the fact that you could have had your screen > damage repaired for $29 + one accidental damage incident rather than the $279 it would cost without it.

If scratch damage was actually covered by AppleCare+ that would be different, but it's not - this is considered 'cosmetic' damage. Unethical customers could deliberately damage their screens more severely and claim it as an accident but that's basically fraudulent and something I would never be willing to do, so good ethical customers are stuck paying the full screen replacement cost for the scratch damage in addition to the AppleCare+ costs that we've invested in to protect our phones.

Assertions to the contrary are wrong. Excerpted from the current AppleCare+ legal terms as of 2019-12-19 1:19pm EST:

"Apple will not provide Hardware Services or ADH Services in the following circumstances:

(a) to protect against normal wear and tear, or to repair cosmetic damage not affecting the functionality of the Covered Equipment;"

Links? How about real life evidence this “high end device” is terrible. All the other high end devices don’t have this problem. None of them. I don’t need some link to tell me the iPhone 11 screens are prone to scratches from normal handling. I’ve been to a half a dozen stores and all the devices are scratched. Not one didn’t have multiple micro scratches. Additionally this thread now has thousands of people saying the exact same thing.

I bought an iPhone 11 Pro Max at an Apple Store. After just two weeks of regular use, and I mean by that phone from my pocket to the table and from the table to my pocket (no keys, coins or anything else in the pocket) the screen of my new iPhone presented quite a few scratches. Last one of them quite severe. I believe this is unacceptable, such poor quality in such an expensive phone. I have never seen anything like this neither in any of my past personal iPhones nor in my Samsung work phones.

I passed by the store to explain the situation and the personnel there very kindly informed me that nothing can be done about it, except changing my screen at my cost, and this after only two weeks. They also explained me that the new screens, to be able to better support hits, have been made more susceptible to scratches. If this is the case, then Apple should acknowledge that there is a problem with these screens not supporting regular use, advertise the problem and warn users that these new iPhones cannot be use without screen protector because they are extremely prone to get scratches with any regular use.

My IPhone 11 screen mysteriously got a large scratch in it within 48 hours of very mild use. It was not dropped or abused and only went in and out of an empty shirt pocket! I am none the less extremely disappointed in this. The phone is brand new! I have multiple Apple Products, including a IPad, IPhone 6s and 4s. My wife has an IPad mini, IPhone 7 and 6 and an I-watch. My father and mother have a iPhone 7 And an IPhone SE. All products are in perfect scratch free condition! All of which are years old and have been in heavy use and still are. None have ever even needed any type of screen protection for scratches. Att. Refused to take the phone back due to the scratch even though they were the very ones who sold me the fact that this Phone was supposed to be the most durable one ever! Apple said I need to get Apple Care! Apple what in the world is going on? How could you do this to some of your most loyal customers?

Come on Williams. You won’t pay hundred thousand to think if you car are scratched or not. I’ve just Jeep Grand Cherokee (but fast one) - half price of cheapest Porsche. But don’t have any idea to protect car though we got desert storm few times per year. Friends of mine was shocked about links you’ve posted who owns Porsche or Ferrari. Windscreen in Ferrari is very robust one - could check that this morning.

This is 100% an issue and many youtube reviewers are scratching their brand new phones by just holding them together front to back. With the one piece glass back having the same hardness and I believe the machined, beveled edges of the new camera cutout, its easily cutting into the front glass of the new displays. Very unfortunate - I returned my 11 after getting a scratch while being extremely careful with the phone and knowing about this issue. Back to an 8 with no screen protection and no issues at all.

Just because they make film for a certain car doesn’t make it “quite common”. I don’t know anyone with a Jeep who will waste money on paint protection.

Friends with Corvettes, Porsches, and BMWs also do not use any of that. My E46M does not have any of that and no one from our local M group uses it either.

The only paint protection I use is wax or sealant. As I said earlier, your analogy does not work.

Let’s switch to watches. When you buy a sports-model Omega or Rolex, will you buy film to protect the case, crystal, bezel, and bracelet from scratches? If you buy any luxury watch, will you wrap it with film? Case and point.

I had almost no scratches on my iPhone 7 for the 3 years I had it. After two weeks my new iPhone 11 Pro has very deep scratches and I have no idea how they got there. So deep that I can feel one of them with my finger.

So now I have to use one of those annoying screen protectors to prevent it from being destroyed completely.

Not a very "pro" experience, compared to my old iPhone 7.

Experienced same issue. Bit the bullet and upgraded my daughters iPhone 7s to the iPhone 11 Pro - 256GB as a Christmas present. She called me the next day and said there are already 3 scratches on the screen. Phone was only put in her purse in an isolated pocket and laid on her nightstand.

We have had many iPhone's over the years and I am carrying 5 of them on my plan and never had an issue with scratches.

VERY DISAPPOINTING for the amount these cost.

May have to get rid of them all now and go to someone else like Galaxy or Samsung.

It doesn’t matter to anyone here if you feel you need to move another brand. We are all users on this forum, so your threat isn’t being read by Apple. Just know that Samsung is using the same glass composition this year, so their screens scratch just as easily. You might want to read through this thread to understand why harder to crack glass doesn’t mean it is less prone scratch. There are links to a Verge article which you should read.

Talk to an Apple senior advisor. They sent me a phone replacement due to my original screen being scratched out of the blue. Unfortunately, I had to put a icarez full screen tempered glass protector and a case on this replacement to avoid scratching this defective glass. First time having to do this on an iPhone since buying a 4 when it first came out...

I help manage all the iPhones for our company. I can assure you that we would NEVER hand out an expensive device like this without having 1. a case or 2. a screen protector.

We use the Zagg Invisible Shield and there is nothing "annoying" about it. You can't even tell it's on the device. It comes with a lifetime guarantee as long as you register it. If anything happens to it - if it cracks, peels off, shatters, etc. - you make a warranty claim, they send you a new one for the price of shipping along with a return envelope for the new one. I can't even tell you the numbers of screens it has saved for us.

I hear people saying, "Oh, I don't want to put anything on the phone and mess with the beauty of it." Well, how beautiful is it when you inevitably drop it and the screen is all scratched up or shattered? We just don't take that chance here, because we do resell the devices after they're upgraded, and want to get top dollar for them.
