The WiFi icon no longer appears on my iPhone 8+ or my iPad since the upgrade to iOS 13/13.1 on both my iPhone and my iPad. iPad 13.1 is what I upgraded to on my iPad. I have powered off and back on and still no icon for WiFi. The devices do seem to work and show connected to WiFi in settings.

Sorry about that but, since this is the first time I read about that missing icon, I'm clueless.
The only thing I can suggest is to have your iphone inspected at an Apple Store or AASP. After checking it out, they'll give you all the available options.

Are you saying that, if you turn on Airplane mode, then turn on wifi, beyond not seeing the wifi icon on status bar, your iPhone can't connect to internet? Should be this case, your iPhone IS NOT using wifi network.
Have you tried to use a different wifi network? What happens?

OK. It does appear on the control center and always has, it also showed as connected on the settings menu and always has. Prior to this it has also appeared at the top of the phone along with the carrier and the signal strength. What you are indicating is that it will no longer appear at the top of the device.
You are right. I believe that the WiFi symbol should be at the top of the device as always. It's weird because it is absent on both my iPhone and my iPad. Unfortunately I do not have an Apple Store very close by. I do have a Best Buy though and I'll see what they have to say.
Apparently it only is an issue with older iPhones, not that my iPhone 8+ is older but it is a couple of years old now. I wonder if the problem exists on the 10, 10s and 10s Max? Apparently it isn't a problem with the 11, 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max.
It would be an Apple issue that isn't a major problem because WiFi works at least on my 8+ and iPad Air 2. However, it is a bit inconvenient.
I have been to a coffee house locally and the WiFi symbol did not appear, its always been there prior to the upgrade, and of course it isn't there in my home WiFi. The was the case for both my iPad Air 2 and also my iPhone 8+.
I trued to upgrade but it only went to the premium 4.95 option which I selected, but it still was an endless working so I just disabled it and cancelled the subscription. WiFi back to normal now on both iPad and iPhone
I have the same issue on my iPhone 7. The WiFi is working OK but the symbol doesn't show at the top of the screen.
Then you have a problem with your phone. This is a screenshot of my iPhone 11 Pro Max, I took like 1 minute ago. Notice the Wifi Symbol where it should be:
Did not wok on the iPhone 8+. Did not work on the iPad Air 2.
Perhaps you need to restart also your modem router.
Then put your iphone in airplane mode, switch on wifi, and see if your device can access internet.
