I am attempting to transfer photos from my iphone 7 plus ios 12.4.1 to my mac book pro ios 10.13.6 using nikon transfer 2 (and i have view nx-1 installed).
It does recognize my photos but when I attempt to transfer I get a communication error immediately.
I am using a usb port to transfer.
Any suggestions?

I suspect it is because the Nikon software is for their cameras and the file formatting is likely not the same as on your phone.
Try Image Capture instead. It is in your Applications folder. Apple support article:

I have been using it for years in this way. All the sudden it is having this communication issue.
