The iPhone 11 Pro Max comes with lightning-to-USB-C cable, but my adapter for USB-C to standard USB won’t charge the phone. It also won’t work with my car that uses Apple CarPlay when plugging into a standard USB port.

Just got done chatting with customer service as I was having the same problem. Try following these steps and see if it works.
Settings>Face ID & Passcode>Scroll to the bottom and make sure "USB Accessories" is green/turned on.

That didn’t fix it. I now know it’s a hardware issue. I tried charging a friend’s phone. She has an iPhone 11 Pro Max, too. It charged with the older, regular USB chargers. I even had the latest iOS update. More recent than hers! So, I’m setting up a Genius Bar appointment.
