Image Capture on MacBook Pro

Does anyone know what this app is for?? I am trying to get my iPhone XR to show up in Image Capture on my MacBook Pro... (it doesn't, the only thing that shows up is our HP printer/scanner.) If I take a bunch of photos on my phone I would like them to automatically download to the MacBook (which is what it says the IC is supposed to do) so I can USE them, but I can't figure out how to connect the two. I am on WiFi; do I have to physically connect them? The Help files are not helping. I have to log into iCloud and wait for them to automatically upload them, then select them to download to the Mac, then move them to folders... Is there something I am missing?? Should I just be using AirDrop? TIA!
