If you do not subscribe to any of Apple's music services how do you download your own music from your own library to the Music app on an iPhone 8?

You can connect your iPhone to a computer and use iTunes just as you would an iPod.
Is that the only way? I had a Google Play subscription for awhile, and it still allows me to download wirelessly (via wi-fi) my music.
Some apps (like google play music, to my knowledge) will allow you to download music offline, but it will only be accessible within that app, not from the Music app.
