Hi, MissL44,

If I understand your post, your sister's MacBook Air displays a prohibitory symbol (a circle with a slash through it). I'm happy to help!

According to the information in About the screens your Mac displays as it starts up - Apple Support, a prohibitory symbol can appear when:

"the selected startup disk contains a Mac operating system, but it's not a macOS that your Mac can use."

To resolve this issue, the article recommends reinstalling the macOS software. You can do that following the steps in How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support.

Best!
