Can’t save as new clip

Since the new update 29/09/19 I can no longer trim a video and save as a new clip. It trims the original and removes the rest. I need this to be reinstated as I edit a lot of large videos and cut them into smaller clips.

I have the same issue, but there is a workaround:

1.Edit your video, done(save), quit;

2.Go back to Album, Select this video, click "up" arrow on the left low corner of the screen, choose "Duplicate" in the scroll down list, the edited video will be copied (with all edited information too);

3.Open the first video to edit again, Click "Revert", then video will be reverted to the original copy, do the second edit operation you want........

This is such a convoluted fix, BUT... I think it works!!! :)

Follow the "save to Files" directions on this site:

https://appletoolbox.com/use-this-workaround-to-save-and-rename-a-trimmed-video-in-ios-13-or-ipados/

After following the instructions above, "save" the new file in your Files folder, which will create a copy of that file into your photo album. Go back into your photo album to see the new file is there, then be sure to delete the original file before you upload the trimmed and double saved file to YouTube. Something about deleting the original file allows YouTube to register the trimmed video properly.

Good luck! :)

Not sure if this will give you all what you are expecting. First, duplicate the video (if you still want to keep the original), then edit the duplicate. In the top right corner there's a gray dot. Tap on that and it looks like it will allow you to use 3rd party apps to edit (not sure). I only had iMovie listed so I selected it. I then clipped the duplicate video and tapped done and it exported the clipped video to my photo library. The first time I tried this, I did get an error, but I tried it again and it has been working fine for me ever since. I uploaded that clipped video to youtube and it only uploaded the clip and not the entire original video. I did notice there is still an option to revert back to original though. It appears it just keeps the original duplicate as a separate hidden file on the phone which will eat up storage, but perhaps the hidden files disappear after 30 or so days. Idk. Guess that might depend on your iCloud settings for Photos.

Hello robcrerie,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your post that you're no longer able to trim a video and save it as a new clip. I am happy to help.

Take a look at the article below and ensure nothing has changed for editing videos.

How to edit videos on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac

If the process to edit a video and save as a new clip is the same let us know if you are using the Photo app or a different app.

What happens when you try to edit a video? Is there any error message?

What part of the video is being trimmed and the rest of it removed?

Are you on the latest iOS software?

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Keep me posted.

Have a great day!

I submitted a bug report for this.  This is a feature I have been using all the time for a long time.

Whenever we edit a video now, in iOS 13.*, we have lost the capability of choosing whether we want to trim the original or save the edited version as a new clip.  Instead, the changes are made on the original video, except they are not.  Only the metadata is changed, so whenever you share the video be it in social media or YouTube, etc, it is actually THE UNCHANGED ORIGINAL VIDEO instead.  We need this feature back, please!!!

Both methods are useful but not perfect. I ran into an issue with the iMovie extension, it was a 20 minute long video and I just wanted 1 minute. Seems like it needs a buffer the same size as the video, as it told me I didn't have space to do it. Took a while to process too. Meanwhile I was able to iMessage it to myself without that extra overhead.

Edit: My biggest issue with the iMessage trick is that it sends the clip to ALL my devices, which will cause them up to fill up fast if I'm not careful.

What we really need is for Apple to provide a better solution.

Hi,

I am on IOS 13.1.2, since this update and the one before I haven’t been able to trim any part of the video and save as new. It doesn’t matter if it’s the beginning or end or both ends of the video. I’m not using a 3rd party app, I am using the apple photos app and clicking my video and pressing edit. Which now shows the crop, trim etc. Please test it your end, as I have asked multiple people with the new update and it no longer works.

I need to be able to save the original video plus the newly trimmed video, hence “save as new”.

Regards,

Rob

I've just spent hours trying to restore 12.4.1 on my iPad 3rd Gen 11 inch that cost me a LOT of money. However I can't because Apple won't sign the IPSW files so therefore PREVENTING me from using the iOS that I want and NEED. I record huge videos and trimming not only takes a LOT longer (10x slower to save) on iOS13 but the lack of "save clip as" has killed my workflow. The trimming is less accurate also - as you hold use your finger rolling it on screen you don't get the same sensitivity or accuracy. The 11 inch can't transfer by USB-C quickly - you're making me have to transfer 200Gig files over airdrop (fails all the time). I'm now having to find and get to know other software because of this as I cannot find a way to downgrade that doesn't involve lots of dodgey software essentially HACKING my own device. Most of all by doing this without a way to revert you've damaged my business because I literally havn't been able to work in the same way.

Apple - my loyalty to you is reaching all time lows. How can you possibly have released this without UAT testing and comparing features?

I agree. It’s possible to trim a video and rotate etc, and it’s stored as a original file that’s reversible. After editing to hearts content, if you try upload to YouTube or a third party app, since the video retains the old junk that should be excised, the bit that uploads is not the bit you want to see. Eg, screen grab 30 seconds. Edit it down to 10. Try and upload the 10 on to YouTube. What appears is not the 10 seconds you want to display, but the first 10 seconds. Why do updates prevent us from doing what we were happily doing before. Make edits irreversible please!
