Apple Watch screen flashing in direct sunlight.

I just recently bought an Apple Watch series 5 and when the watch face is exposed to direct sunlight the screen starts flashing on and off. I have the always on mode turned on and the watch will auto-dim. Not sure why this is happening and would like to fix it if possible. Any thoughts?

Hi Chips,

I realise it is not ideal but is it possible for you to upload a video to iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, YouTube, etc. and provide a link to show what the issue is?

Additionally, just a few related questions:

  • have you got a complication running full screen at the time this happens or just a watch face
  • has your watch been in direct sunlight for long and does it feel hot to the touch
  • have you updated to the most recent WatchOS release / are you running a WatchOS beta
  • what is your battery charge (approximately) at the time this is happening?
  • what is the brightness setting on your Always On Display (default, low, high)

Unfortunately the possible causes are still fairly broad at this point - it is entirely possible you are having issues with the ambient light sensor, or it could be related to operating temperature, etc. I would also suggest biting the bullet and doing a pair and unpair and a clean set up of your watch just to eliminate setup/connectivity as potential factors.

That. Is. Bullocks. The display in Series 4 is the same exact display. It’s the display controller which is different, and which allows the Series 5 to reduce its refresh rate to about 1Hz for Always On. But the flashing issues are not caused by this controller, or by Always On for that matter. To add to this, the flashing isn’t occurring at frequencies anywhere near 1Hz. If anything, the flashing is quite irregular. The sensor that really is causing the problem is the Ambient Light Sensor, and that hasn’t changed at all since the Series 4. Judging by the last post before mine, even the Series 6 has the very same Ambient Light Sensor as the previous two generations.
