Internet works, but no upload speed, no ftp

I have a Macbook pro retina 2012 running El Capitan 10.11.6. Everything's been fine. Then mid last week I started having several issues.

My website email channeling in via POP mail started going on and offline a lot. I also have gmail that is working fine. I also noticed that suddenly I couldn't upload to my website via ftp. I use Cyberduck and have my passwords etc programmed in. It says it's "mounting" then times out.

I ran a speed test via my ISP. I'm getting 12-13 mps download and 0 upload. My husband has a 19" MBP also running El Capitan. His upload/download speeds are fine. So that means it's me. It's like there is some "off" button on my computer blocking me from doing stuff. (It should be noted again, my gmail works fine and I can surf the Internet without a problem.)

Nothing has changed. Haven't uploaded any new software. Haven't changed anything. Restarting doesn't fix it.

I tried the "fix your wifi" where you delete the preferences and then set a new manual location. Did nothing to fix it.

Ran the "test your hardware" (that software looks like it should be running on my old Quadra). Nothing shows up as broken.

This is driving me nuts! Help!

Hello Jamie,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are having an issue with Wi-Fi on your MacBook Pro, even after trying some good troubleshooting steps. You can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Check for Wi-Fi issues using your Mac

Next, use safe mode to start up your Mac as it does the following things:

  1. Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  2. Loads only required kernel extensions
  3. Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
  4. Disables user-installed fonts
  5. Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Log in to your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Graphics performance limited in macOS Recovery, safe mode, or Guest User mode

Cheers!

Thanks for replying, Jamie, and that additional info, it really helps! After you test this issue in a new user, check the firewall settings in your user account, as well as if you have security software that could be causing a connections issue:

Change Firewall preferences on Mac

If you're still having an issue after these steps, please contact Apple for further assistance with your situation.

To start, Verizon replaced our modem saying there was a bad circuit in the one we had. I thought this would solve all the problems. It did not. In fact, the Internet speed on my MBP is now so slow, I'd like to throw the modem into the nearby lake. The speed tests I've been running have not improved and my upload speed remains at zero.

I opened my MBP in safe mode and it did very scary things. It ran a series of black bars up the screen several times before coming into the opening screen. When I tried to open Google Chrome, it did the same, flashing it on and off and was totally unuseable. I opened Firefox and it opened with the lettering at like 300% and wouldn't scroll up and down. I opened Safari and was able to access the web and speed tests, but it was not any different than before.

I restarted and prayed everything would still work. I seriously thought I had blown up my computer.

I did run the wireless diagnostics. It said there was no problem with the connection.

I have not yet tried a different user.
