Macbook pro doesn't recognise Canon camera anymore

My MacBook Pro has stopped recognising my Canon 5D mkII camera. It also doesn't recognise my card reader. I've checked the cables and they are working and they are both recognised on another computer. I'd be grateful for any help please.

Try rebooting the computer.

Disconnect all other external devices.

Try an SMC reset and PRAM reset (hold the PRAM reset for a full minute so it activates several times).

Try using another port, cable, and adapter. Plug the camera and card reader directly into the laptop.

Has anything changed on your computer? Installed or removed any software? Did you make any changes to the camera? Are you using the same SD card?

Hi HWTech,

Thank you very much for your reply. I have now tried all the things you suggested above but I’m still getting the message that no device is detected when I connect my camera or my card reader.

Nothing changed on the computer to make this happen. I was actually in the middle of uploading images from

my card reader when the issue first occurred. One minute the card reader was detected and the images were uploading and the next minute the device just wasn’t detected anymore.

Are you aware of anything else that I could try?

Many thanks

If the SD Card and Card Reader work on another system, then try using a powered USB3 hub to connect the card reader to your laptop. The powered hub may supply more power to the SD card and reader, plus the hub can act as a buffer and filter.

You could also try booting into Safe Mode, but I'm not sure the Card Reader will be recognized since Safe Mode disables any unnecessary drivers.

It is possible one of the items is beginning to fail and the Mac is just being more particular than the other system to working with the Card Reader and SD card. I've had more trouble with USB sticks working correctly on a Mac than I have ever seen with a regular PC.
