Apps not opening from recent apps

Restart your iPad and try again, if it still doesn’t work, force restart your iPad and try again.

• iPad models with Face ID: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts.
• iPad with Home button, iPhone 6s or earlier, and iPod touch (6th generation) or earlier: Press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons until you see the Apple logo.

go to settings > general > multitasking & dock > show suggested and recent apps

I turned off my recent apps function and then turned it back on... has worked fine ever since.

Turning recent apps/suggestions off and then back on seems to have fixed the problem for me as well. Had been happening randomly ever since iOS 13.

I believe this issue is now fixed in latest ios., eg 13.3

Yes, this seems to be an issue with this version of the iPad OS. When I was on the beta channel, I didn’t recall experiencing this issue, but now that I’m on the public release channel, I’m noticing this all the time with seemingly random apps. When I long press on the non-functioning app, it seems that iPad OS can’t recognize it and simply shows it as “(null).”

It happens when the app is updated. The old app is deleted, a newer version loaded, but the recent apps link still points to the old version, which is long gone. No fix that I can find, other than turning recent apps off until Apple fixes it.

I have this problem, it randomly affects different apps.

Restarting the IPad is not an acceptable solution, the problem comes back straight away.

there is a bug causing this problem, even using ios 13.1.3

Where do you turn “the recent app” function off?
