Playing AVI files (in fact not being able to play them)

We used to be able to play the AVI files from garden trail cam (hedgehogs) on our iPads but recently they will not play. I have ipad mini 3 12.4.2 and ipad air 13.1.2. Why are apple not supporting AVI files? I'm also involved in a Red Squirrel conservation project that uses 70 odd trail cams, all the volunteers that have Macs have a problem with viewing AVI files.

Why won't apple support easy playing of AVI files? I just click and they play in Win 10 and I thought Apple was all about "it just works", it doesn't.

Try and forget it's MS for the moment, my point is that it's used by the majority of trail cam makers and many other non MS entities and Apple is just making life difficult to make a point. Apple used to play avi files, they just stopped to be awkward. I use MS as main desktop and laptop, Apple for phone/pad and Linux occasionally. All are useful but all annoy me, the annoyance is mostly caused by issues such as this where they're all wanting the user to stick to their brand, it's not going to happen.
