Play avi files with VLC player. Usual solution does not work

I know it's been dealt with many times but the usual solution does not fix the problem. I tried to select the -avi file with the mouse and right click on it to select Open With --> Another App and then select VLC and mark the "Always open with this application" option and press Open. It does open up with VLC but the next .avi file I try to open starts QucikTime Player instead of VLC.

Is there another way to solve this?
