Special character problems

I am trying to type special characters in a pages document. But the character just repeats when I hold it down and doesn't bring up all the accents you can use. What do I need to change?

Foreign accents - using keyboard My keyboard died. After recharging it no longer will allow me to use foreign accent marks on letters. Apple Support site says to make sure keyboard slider is NOT set to off, and then everything will work fine fine. IT DOES NOT. Whether on a website, in Gmail, Word or Pages, this function DOES NOT WORK. HELP!! Thank you. ps - Apple needs to update it's support replies in this area! Accents on keyboard I speak 4 languages so I use different accents all the time. Until recently, all I had to do was hold on the key for a second and then all the different accent options would pop up but now, when I hold a key, the letter just repeats. How do I fix this?

Sometimes the only way to fix it is to move to a new account, if you have tried all the ideas at places like this
