Album art in Music for Catalina

I just upgraded to Catalina and noticed all of my album art did not show up in Music. Will this be fixed in the next update? I have thousands of albums and would hate to manually attempt to fix this. Please let me know, thanks! Chuck

Um, double Hmm you still may be onto something. I pretty much determined that my disappear/reappear problem might be from my Plex server scanning my music library. As stated before I did what you said (saving a copy of the original "new Music Library.musiclibray" that Catalina created just in case) and that did not seem to solve the problem. So I deleted the rebuild that was created using your steps, and went back to the original that Catalina created... and everything now works. I still see a momentary screen refresh when Plex server scan my library, but no more lost artwork. I still think your method may very well recover other people's artwork for those that aren't able to ever get it to load.

Hi, please see my replies to AntonioRADOSAV. You are correct the artwork has always been there and was never actually deleted, and it appears my problem has now been solved. An interesting point. When my artwork was in its "disappeared" phase, Right-Click>Get Info>Artwork indicated that there was no artwork. When the Artwork would reappear, Right-Click>Get Info> Artwork would show artwork.

It did not work for me. still a lot missing. as someone else said, it is what was done at upgrade time.

BUT: I made a smart playlist with albums without artwork. And guess: it contained albums with artwork. SO I selected all songs of that album, went to info, artwork, selected the artwork which was there and guess: bingo!. it disappears from the smart playlist!

furthermore the smart playlist refers to songs which do not exist anymore......

Hi all,

Good news!!!

There is a latest update for Catalina, still the same version. I can't tell it did the update after the update.

Anyway, it is about 900MB of update download. After the reboot, and the initial start up for Music app was slow (looks like it rebuild something) but then all the album artwork are there. And the Music app is fast and responsive.

I shut down the Music app and restart, all the album artwork are still there and the system run smoothly (mostly but not always compared with iTunes) again.

I believe Apple has fix the issue.

Please update your Catalina and let you know if you experience the fix.

Good luck all!!

I have my music collection on a NAS and was missing all my album artwork. I managed to accidentally delete all my music off the NAS and had to restore from a backup. Once I did that, all of my album artwork showed up on my Mac and iPhone.

I think there might be a hidden file on the NAS/external drive that also needs removing. Do that, resync, and enjoy your meticulously embedded album artwork!

Somebody else will have to test this to be sure cause I'm not going thru that again. 😅

Yes, it does appear like the Catalina Supplemental Update may have resolved the issue. I tentatively reopened Music with the Album Artwork folder in place, and without having rebuilt my Music Library like a few people have suggested (ie. I was using the same one that had been created by the initial Catalina install).

Music immediately showed Loading Artwork, Loading Artist Artwork (this one was new), and Updating iCloud Library. The app did grow to 17 GB after a while, but album artwork was loading up little by little in my Up Next list.

This process stopped after 10–15 minutes, and my album artwork all seems to be there. Music is sitting at 24 GB, but it’s not using up any CPU (other than playing music), and neither is AMPArtworkAgent. In fact, this latter process is now unloaded, whereas previously it would be constantly running, spiking at 100%, even when Music wasn’t showing any activity.

Fingers crossed. If you’re running Catalina and have disabled automatic updates, make sure you open Software Updates in System Preferences and install this update.

this helped for me:

1)rename your old iTunes music folder (where the music files are in)

2)Start from scratch with a blank music libraryin the music app

3)import the music files from 1 in to the new music library

lots of them will already have artwork

4)Select all albums and get artwork.

I recovered 95% of 1000 albums artwork.

In addition to the artwork being an issue, I have also noticed other issues with how the music appears to be organized. When I add new files, they are getting duplicated. It is miscategorizing songs into different albums even though they are on the same album. I cannot copy and paste artwork from certain albums to other albums. There are just a lot of issues. For some of the albums missing artwork, I can clearly see the artwork is still associate with the file in the Finder.

I have the latest update. No change for me; still roughly 550 tracks with lost art.

This has been a touchy issue for me for years. Even when I had things nearly perfect, I would see signs of something wrong with Cover Art. Some albums would mysteriously have a large thumbnail, but tracks on the album or the entire album would lack a small thumbnail. Sometimes the opposite (small but no large).

I would always just select the album, Get Info, and drop a replacement artwork for the entire album. Yet I could never get rid of them all; it seemed to be some sort of recurring issue with no obvious patterns.

I am going to just leave it as it is. Fixing 550 things is a time sink I no longer care to pay, as I've lost all faith that I'll ever enjoy flawless Cover Art, and certainly not enjoy it for long enough before it fails again.

Same issue here... a couple observations: When I go to print, and print album list, the artwork print fine! Just all the icons are blank in Music. Also, I have started and restated multiple times (safe mode, etc) and the data file "Music Library" always stops ate 114 MB, that's where it always stalls. On a couple occasions, artowkr did load for the most recent added, but always stalled at the same spot/album. I deleted that album to see if that's what caused it, ut made no difference, stalled in the same sequence place.

I let it run for 3 days now and no progress at all. Apple support has been of no help so far....
