In the new Mac osX CataIina I cannot find a way to change the columns viewed in Mail. You used to be able to change the field widths and add columns from the View/Columns menu. How can I accomplish this now?
Also, what does the black background TO next to the email title mean?

Unfortunately its still in some ways a one size fits all. Whatever way you set out your columns seems to follow through for all mail boxes. It's been a long time now since apple screwed over mail, but I think we used to be able to have different column layouts for different mailboxes.
Happy to hear columns are back! But after 15 years of upgrading the moment apple releases upgrades, I won't be upgrading to big sur for a LONG TIME so that I can hear about potentially business-destroying changes/bugs before I upgrade. Apple's handling of Catalina and their complete and utter lack of any response to our concerns about the changes in mail (other than to delete posts they don't like--they're all over THAT), has led me to simply not trust them anymore.
Good for you AZsport115! Apple's non-stop upgrades offer little, if nothing, to the regular user. There is NO WAY I can trust Apple to make 'changes' (AKA, 'upgrades') that actually benefit me rather than harm me. I speak from experience. This catalina issue is just one example (out of many) of how staff at Apple isn't functioning in the 'real world' when it comes to what us users are doing.
Is Big Sur effective and solid on MacBook Pro, Retina, 15inch, Late 2013 — 2.6GHz Quad Core Intel? I am leery of these recent upgrades and the loss of legacy software options.
A message to Apple:
"Please do not be so distant from your loyal customers and fans!!!". You could have responded to this thread to give us hope.
Well said, Kernow, Apple have done the right thing, eventually, BUT need to accept the criticism that they ignored so many loyal supporters. Talk to your supporters, the people who make it possible for you to continue. Learn from your mistake in not listening to your customers.

This is me too - and I've only just bought this Mac. How come Apple hasn't fixed this on Catalina using one of their endless stream of updates to fix bugs? Why do i have to switch to Big Sur? So annoying.
This is how my hotmail appears on Catalina - what is the POINT of the column telling me I'm in my hotmail inbox when I'm already in my hotmail inbox? Why can't I swap the columns round? Or name them in the header? Or have the mini toolbar function right next to the sender's name so I can quickly delete or file without having to trek up to the top toolbar Every. Single. Time?
Or is there a quick fix that I'm missing?

this is pathetic..mail is now a mickey mouse mail program...please apple fix ...this really affects my work and stop taking away the great thing about mail
