I am no longer able to search.
1) if I search something all it does is show the numerical number of matches below the search bar - nothing changes in the actual email list
2) if I select the sender (right click) same result - nothing shows up except the numerical number of results which does not help
I tried to rebuild my mailbox but this does nothing.
Any help would be appreciated.
This solved my problem. My search was broken too. I followed the stop/start spotlight as mentioned in the post above and the search is gradually coming back to normal. I think Spotlight needed a kick to get moving.
Summarizing from the link:
1) Launch the Terminal.app (Just copy/paste the string starting with sudo.... and press return)
2) Stop Spotlight and remove the indexing: # sudo mdutil -i off -E / <return>
3) Enable it again by typing: # sudo mdutil -i on / <return>

Since I am apparently the only one this doesn't work for, I am assuming this is an issue that will never be fixed for me, much like another issue I have been dealing with since 2012 through multiple iterations of MacOS.
You need to grant terminal full access
Same problem here - on my iMac mail search is broken, rebuilding without success - on my macbook pro it works flawlessly
I only have Catalina installed.
Same problem here.. no matter what search term is entered 5172 results are indicated below the search box but nothing updates or changes... Apple please fix
It seemed to correct itself after about 24 hours in my case!

After 30 minutes also gmail account works fine
It seems that the problem is solved
Search function in Mail only looks in Mailboxes and not inbox. This has happened since upgrading to Catalina. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thanks.
Thank you, I followed the advice above regarding Gmail (deactivate/reactivate the account in System Prefs) and it worked right away.
