What happens, when you try to open the iPhoto Library? Do you get an error message? If yes, what is the message?
Try to open the Photos.app while holding down the options key ⌥. Keep holding down ⌥ until the library chooser dialog appears. Is your iPhoto Library shown in the library chooser dialog? Then select it.
Which version of iPhoto have you been using before the upgrade to Catalina? Has it been iPhoto '11, version 9.6.1 or an older version?
Trying to open iPhoto library using all the tips written here.
I just clicked twice again... Right now it's updating in Photos at 12%. Last time it did not go until 100% and I got an error message 5can't remember which one).
You need a full backup of your Mac from the time when you still have been running Mojave, a Time Machine backup or a bootable clone.
Then you can boot into the Recovery partition and restore your Mac from the backup. You cannot just replace the system by the older version, you will have to restore the data as well. https://www.imore.com/how-downgrade-macos
I kept having the same issue until I saw this Photos notification in my notification bar and clicked on it and BAM! The app itself is nowhere to be found but I was able to find it from the notification bar.
You will have to install Catalina sooner or later so you may as well get used to Photos.
I migrated iPhoto to Photos by double clicking iPhoto app in Pictures and now all is good - everything there only in Photos - you have no choice.
Spoke to Apple this afternoon, they were no help transferring my 14,000 pictures from iPhoto to Photos and keeping them in the same order. Currently in iPhoto they are numbered 1 to 14,000 but when I transfer (I just tried 10 pictures) they arrive in Photos not in name order but in date order! A right mess, my photo library is useless if the are in the wrong order.
Looked for alternative applications, but none seem to exist any more, for example Picasa apparently has been now discontinued.
Any ideas anyone what I can use instead of iPhoto, Photo does not work for me, so until I find a solution I cannot upgrade my OS.
Really cannot see why everyone is complaining about losing iPhoto - I was an avid fan but now with Catalina I have merged everything to Photo and cannot see the difference - so all good.
People should just get on with it and embrace change....
Hi Terence,
So what is the nearest application in functionality to iPhoto?
I need to order photos in file name order. Photos certainly does not do this.
Appreciate any insight you can give.

This worked for me. When I only opened the Photos app, most of the albums were missing. I closed it and opened it again while holding the option key down and chose IPhoto library and now they are all there. I recommend this because it worked for me! Now I am okay about upgrading my system. Thank you!
Thank you but that is not my problem , What i need is iPhoto to finish my book it is all done thru iPhoto PHOTO will not work . iPhoto is the only one where you can do this project trans mitt to APPLE and they MAKE the BOOK FOR YOU.
There are SO MANY on line programs yiu can upload your photos and create a photo book. You can put them on a memory card and go to dept store where u print your pics and do it there! Don't understand your problem!
Iphoto has the APP built in where you do the Books guess you have never used iPhoto this way but you do it all thru APPLE and iPhoto and they print out you=r book for a price . I have a book i was doing and almost finished with before I did the download for the NEW CATALINA .
no, I never used it, I made a book by going on line and uploading pics. My friends go to shop where you can print pics or create book - start agian - so copy all your photos to stick and take it to a shop or online.
Too late complaining - move forward
ok, im not sure how the scanning feature helps but all I did was go to search on your Mac, then type in "iPhoto library" and select the library. Open it up and it should open all your files (and open Photo too) and from there you can work on your pics.
Simple - Finder - Pictures - double click iPhoto and it will ask you if you want to migrate into Photos - I did and all black to normal in Photos! Read all the other comments in previous pages - look at what Leonie says
