I saw the notice that notice that iPhotos wouldn't work in Catalina and stopped the upgrade until I could figure something out. My biggest issue is maintaining the event folder/albums. Yes, in the Photos app, I found listed iPhoto events. I start checking back event. Not all pictures were in a few of the events. Now I have over 72,000 photos and over 1,000 events so , no, I haven't checked them all. I've taken a 1T external portable hard drive - creating a folder- giving it the name from an iPhoto event - transferring photos to this new folder on external hard drive. Perhaps there's an easier method, but with literally thousands of photos, I figured that this would be a good way to keep my separate event "albums." It's time consuming, but not as much as me trying to separate over 72,000 individual photos into events.
Simple - Finder - Pictures - double click iPhoto and it will ask you if you want to migrate into Photos - I did and all black to normal in Photos! Read all the other comments in previous pages - look at what Leonie says

I'm using an iMac, upgraded to Catalina and my iphoto is no able to open. Totally panicked, found a clue on internet search, there is PHOTOS emoji , looks like a rainbow colored flower, my photos are there now but not nearly as easy for me to use as iPhoto.
First, to be safe backup and rename your current Photos Library. To switch over to Photos, launch Photos with the option key held down. From the resulting dialog, select your iPhoto Library. Photos will create a new Photos Library with the media from your iPhoto Library. Your old iPhotos library will not be affected.
Then you can export all the unmodified originals in the new Photos/iPhotos library. Rename your original Photos library back to what it was and import the originals to your existing Photos Library.
Someone else might chime in with software that will merge your two libraries, but for a one time thing you might want to do it manually
Photos isn’t the right answer. You can’t replace iPhoto with Photos. IPhoto was a reliable way to amateur photographers to organise photos. Photos is for kids to have photos in social media.
I think that that Capture One might be the answer (Loupedec support), but I haven’t tried it yet. So I don’t upgrade my Mac 🖥 yet.
I suggest you take a closer look at Photos, which is more powerful and capable than iPhoto ever was. And, yes kids can use it ofr social media, but so can serious hobbyists. That said, there are plenty of alternatives, depending on the kind of shooter you are, and your budget. I would, for instance, point out that CaptureOne would be among the more expensive applications.
Lightroom Classic
CaptureOne
DxO Photolab
OnOne Photo Raw
Photo Supreme
Mylio
is a non-exhaustive list.
Using the advice previously given in this discussion (thanks!), I was able to once again import the iPhoto library into Photo. It had taken about about 15 minutes the first time I had imported it, including a progress bar. The photos displayed properly in Photo. But they had disappeared on reboot. As per the advice, I held down the option key as I launched Photo, was shown a list of the photo libraries, and then once again I selected the iPhoto library (there were two for some reason, with the same name, I used the first listed). The imported iPhoto library then instantly appeared in Photo. It seems that the library was still in Photo, although it was not displaying or listed in Photo. Apparently the process woke up the Photo app. But this time, after several reboots, the photos continued to be there each time. I am not going to delete the iPhoto library anytime soon!
Thanks again!
Regarding the folder icons in Finder, about 20% of them continue to not have folder icons.
The advice about holding down the option key when booting Photo was provided by:
Note that the first person I spoke with at Apple tech support did know this method and I was able to import at that time. But when I rebooted, the seemingly imported library was no longer visible. I spoke with tech support again and was put on hold for an hour waiting for the "Creative Media Department" who handled this type of problem, but I hung up when no help seemed to be forthcoming.
Thanks again daadams3.
Just to let everyone know that everything now is all good , I opened Photo under file I clicked on Create there is was BOOKS when click on books it took me to the APP store where i found what I-needed . My book that I started in iPhoto was all there and I will be able to finish it . Thanks to all
I have "migrated: to Photos and have one problem (so far). How do I find photos in the specific album? For example. I have 2 albums. Name of one is "For Sale" and another is "Sold". If I have 1000 items in the albums and I am looking for sold photos of Barcelona, this search gives me ALL photos of Barcelona (in both albums, "sold" and "for sale). How do I get result ONLY from specific album? In iPhoto it was easy. I just select the album and then go on search. In Photos it doesn't work that way. Can somebody please help?
Thank you!
Apple is not going to do anything. Apple stopped developing and supporting iPhoto years ago.
Move onto Photos now. Hold down the option key while opening the Photos App, and select your iPhotos library to import it into Photos.
Over the past 6 pages - everyone has given you answers - OT, Leonie, Terrence Devlin - to name a few. All have been answered.
Get over iPhoto and I suggest you follow OT - this will solve your situation
While what you're saying is true, keep your attitude to yourself. You could have easily omitted your "Get over.." comment. Just saying. Yes it's frustrating to keep getting alerts for this discussion. Just ignore them since you've already given your comments.
All we are trying to do is salvage all the work we put into iPhoto and getting “testy” with each other won t help. The best advise I’ve seen so far was from Phil. I am updating my Photos app right now with my iPhoto library.
