macOS Catalina TV app not showing my iTunes library

I updated my MacBook Pro to 10.15 (Catalina) today and the new TV app isn't showing me my iTunes library, which includes a very large number of movies and TV shows. The Library tab shows empty placeholders for the 18 movies that I had downloaded, but no actual movie thumbnails, just the movie names and an empty box for each one. Oddly, the Watch Now tab shows my recently played and purchased movies and TV shows, and if I search for a movie that I own I get a movie page with a Play button, so it knows I own the movie. I tried signing out and back in to iCloud and rebooting, but nothing helps.

I had similar problems and found a solution via apple support call The problem was with my login items. I shutdown and restarted in safe mode. (Hold shift key while restarting until login screen appears) After opening the TV app, all the thumbnails appeared. I then removed my 4 login items (AdGuard, Dropbox, Clean-myMac, and Audio Hijack Scheduler) and restarted in regular mode. All the thumbnails were populated in the TV app. I'll be adding back the startup items one at a time to see which one it is.

Just an update:

My AppleTV library started populating on the same day the TV app library showed up in Catalina... I used to get the spinning

Glad to hear this fix is rolling out...

Do be patient because on the Apple TV... the library in the TV app there in tvOS is slightly unreliable... it takes about 30 seconds of spinning wheel no response (that's when I lose patience) and I go back to home and into the Movies app... the Purchased section there populates after a few seconds of spinning wheel... and when I switch back to the TV app the library there has now populated the purchases...

Still not working for me anywhere.... on my MacBook, iMac or AppleTV. I've updated to latest fixes and signed out and back in. Interestingly and a bit frustrating, in Music App while re-syncing my iCloud Music Library (since I had signed out and back in), it duplicated all of my personal playlists 8 times in my library. All these duplicates appeared on every device including iPhone/iPad.

I think all of this is related because the iCloud Music Library was the same functionality for TV and Movies and when they separated the apps, I feel like the cloud syncing was broken.

Anyway, I'm hoping that something will trigger my Movies and TV libraries to start to appear like it has for some of you. Just waiting for now. Thanks for all the updates.

Kerry, that's great that it is working for you!

The Library tab in the TV app on macOS stopped updating for me a few weeks ago. It was showing purchases through some date in March, but never showed any new purchases. I just tried logging out and back in to the iTunes Store based on your report, and now it is back to showing only downloads ... no cloud-based content showing. I'll will leave the app running for a while, but it looks like macOS is back to the originally reported bug, after working for a few months. iTunes on Windows is still broken and now the iPadOS TV app is being flaky. It goes a few days without showing any new purchases, then they show up, and then it goes back to not updating. The original report was a bit over six months ago.

Since the bug is server side, whether anything works or not is probably based on which server in the server farm you get.

FYI, same as the last few times, it worked on my Macs for a week or so, then stopped again (can't connect me to my video library.)

So, something is up with the servers that they aren't permanently fixing. It seems after any major release, they clear the slate, we all can connect, then it stops from that point forward until the next big fix. Super annoying (this has been going on now since October and we are to May.)

Thanks for the information.

I tried TV->Account->Authorizations->Authorize This Computer... and after providing my AppleID password it tells me that I was already authorized and that it has reauthorized me. There is no change in the symptoms.

I then tried TV->Account->Authorizations->Deauthorize This Computer..., followed by a power down and restart and then repeated the Authorize step. Again, there was no change in the symptoms ... everything is exactly as I described in the original post.

I have no experience with calling the Support phone number ... is that a worthwhile way to proceed? It seems to me that this is a software bug, probably related to the size of my library.

I did report a software bug to Apple years ago, in great detail, with steps to reproduce ... they did not respond and eventually replaced the component that had the bug with no notification to me except that they had closed my bug. It seems like Apple just doesn't work with bug reports or the people who report bugs.

I feel like the latest go-rounds of iOS, iPadOS, tvOS and macOS have all had major problems. It's discouraging.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Home Sharing (and Media Sharing, which seems to go along for the ride) were already turned on, but I tried turning them off and on to see if that fixed it. No change at all.

I should also mention that aside from my test of searching for a particular movie I own to verify that the TV app knows I own it, I can also use Account->Purchased to see the full list of what I own. So, the iTunes Store knows what I have and I have access to this information. It seems to be the Library tab that is completely broken for me.

For what it's worth, the Library tab in the TV app on my Apple TV 4K is also completely broken in tvOS 13.0. The main difference there is that it shows a spinner for about a minute before informing me that I have no purchased content. On the macOS TV app, there is no spinner and it shows me placeholder images for my downloaded movies. You, of course, can't download movies to the Apple TV 4K device. But the Apple TV 4K has "iTunes movies" and "iTunes tv" apps that show my purchases, so the 4K is less crippled than the macOS app.

I do appreciate all of the suggestions!

I also have the same issue. I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Catalina where my my iMac is running Mojave. The iMac holds the iTunes library which is very large and is very much the media centre for other apple devices.

On my MacBook Pro I can only see part of my iTunes library. About 50% of the movies and TV shows are not shared via the shared library, I have tried everything but cannot get it to work. I very much regret upgrading to Catalina.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes of course it would show up but that is not the same issue these people are talking about. You are home sharing over your own Wi-Fi. Everyone else here is looking at the library from the mothership Apple, they may not even have Wi-Fi, they may be camping at a national park and just watching the library over a cell phone. It is very different from what your answer was. Just saying So that everyone knows not to expect the same results.

Interesting idea, but rebooting in safe mode and cleaning up login items (and sign out/in afterwards) accomplished nothing for me... :(

And TV app is bad, lemme tell ya. Just bad. It even have the same issues iTunes had for years, for example it you playing a movie/show already, if you press "play" on another movie in your library, it just shuts down the player. Apple have no testers anymore

"movie posters" is just another f***k up in my opinion. I freaking hate the new vertical "ad-like" poster. Why break what was good before? Or, if they really wanted unifying aspect ratio for video content, why could get rid of weird *** "round" TV show poster design, and replace with regular vertical. Every TV show has it, no need to redesign. Now every content creator needs to do this unusual aspect ratio (along with new super wide itunes store ads). And you know what? Not everyone will. And there will be a lot of movies and tv shows (esp. old ones) with round/vertical posters just fit in horizontal frame with blur. Ugly. And unnessesary.

There is no regular iTunes store (only weird Apple TV box style) while Music.app HAS IT. Why? Why different.

The navigation is ******d too. I watched a TV show, let's say season 2 of Simpsons. Episode 2. I finished. Where is the button/forward to the next one? There is no such button in the player anymore, not in the menu, not on episode's page. WHY? Isn't it the most necessary thing for serials? No testers here. Ok. But if I press "back" button to go the the TV show's page... It loads last season. Why? Every time I finished with episode, I need to press back, choose season, scroll to the episode, press it, and press play. Who was the mastermind on this?

Anyway, nothing works so far. I just bought a TV show, and it immediately started downloading for some reason, and showing up in my library. I canceled downloading, cleaned it up (deleted episides' downloads) and it vanished. Even this doesn't help.

at least it appears you all can sign in to your account! I'm logged into iCloud, all my devices (phone, ATV, iPod) and I still can't sign into TV app or Music app. I sign out of iCloud on my MacBook Pro, reboot, log back into iCloud, and I will usually get an error 11556 in the music app. With the TV app, I just log in, and it appears like I've done nothing!

Am having identical issues which over FOUR HOURS on the phone with Apple have done nothing to help. Updated yesterday with high hopes due to their "I promise we're working on it and it'll be fixed soon" remark but no joy. (A distinct lack of joy, actually.)

Wanted to ask: has anyone having these specific issues noticed that there is NOT an option to buy SD TV episodes using their MacBook? I can still find them using my iPhone but not my computer. The ONLY buy option is HD. I am not going to increase my entertainment budget by 50% just due to lack of options and wanted to know if anyone else is having this same issue, since EVERYTHING else is identical (lack of thumbnails on downloads, total absence of library items not downloaded, no "next episode" button, etc.).

Is it just me? Anyone else?
