macOS Catalina TV app not showing my iTunes library

I updated my MacBook Pro to 10.15 (Catalina) today and the new TV app isn't showing me my iTunes library, which includes a very large number of movies and TV shows. The Library tab shows empty placeholders for the 18 movies that I had downloaded, but no actual movie thumbnails, just the movie names and an empty box for each one. Oddly, the Watch Now tab shows my recently played and purchased movies and TV shows, and if I search for a movie that I own I get a movie page with a Play button, so it knows I own the movie. I tried signing out and back in to iCloud and rebooting, but nothing helps.

I had similar problems and found a solution via apple support call The problem was with my login items. I shutdown and restarted in safe mode. (Hold shift key while restarting until login screen appears) After opening the TV app, all the thumbnails appeared. I then removed my 4 login items (AdGuard, Dropbox, Clean-myMac, and Audio Hijack Scheduler) and restarted in regular mode. All the thumbnails were populated in the TV app. I'll be adding back the startup items one at a time to see which one it is.

This problem is now affecting the TV app on my Apple TV 4K. I navigate to the Library tab and the wheel spins for a few minutes before returning the message “You haven’t purchased any TV Shows or Movies”. Search, Browsing, and Up Next work fine - showing items previously purchased as playable. I can also still open the old iTunes Movies and TV Shows apps to browse my purchases library.

So now the TV app’s Library tab only works in iOS for me now - and fails on macOS and tvOS.

I have this exact problem. Additionally, iTunes in Windows suddenly "can't connect you to your library." Note: this is only for video content. I can see and download purchased music content from the library in Music (Catalina) and iTunes (Windows.) I have been in contact with Apple support several times in the past few months, and no answers yet (the upper level techs were all "we don't know.") Incredibly frustrated that this hasn't been solved (and 170ish people have clicked the "I have this question too" button.)

One of the Apple support people I talked to claimed that there are people with similarly sized libraries who do not have the problem, but I don't know enough about the internals of Apple's server farms to guess what is going wrong for the folks who are broken.

I don't think that Apple does itself any favors by ghosting people in mid-support. My last two requests for update have not received responses yet.

I haven't heard anything other than a "waiting on engineering to get back to us" e-mail from Apple exec relations yesterday since my call last week with the Apple product specialist who collected my logs. I find it at least semi-reassuring that they are following-up on an open escalated issue. However, I don't expect any serious traction until after the new year.

Same for me except it now looks like when I download content on MacOS the meta data (such as the iTunes Extras link) comes down with my purchases. Earlier I couldn't figure out how to get to the Extras content. It's a pain but, if I download first, I can now get to that content on MacOS. I think this is a slight change in behavior (downloading the meta data) but I'm not 100% sure when it changed.

Otherwise:

  • iOS shows my library (iPhone XS Max version 13.3)
  • iPadOS shows my library (iPad Pro 10.5 version 13.3)
  • macOS TV app does not show my library (iMac and MacBook version 10.15.2)
  • tvOS does not show my library (Apple TV 4K version - 13.3)
  • Apple support engineer does not respond to requests for status update

Please keep the status updates coming. It's good to hear whether others are getting any traction on our issue.

Another issue not being able to access my library, is that I can't just go into "purchased" and download just a single episode of a tv show. The only option is to download the entire season.

Because when you go to Account>Purchased. It defaults to movies tab, so if you switch it to TV Shows, you are unable to sort them by "all" like I was able to with previous builds of itunes. I've provided a picture, as you can see no options to download a single episode.

You can at least search for the name of the TV series to reach the show's detail page. Unfortunately, I see no way to download individual episodes here - only individual seasons.

The macOS Catalina version of the TV app is a user experience mess. Another example of this circuitous headache is that the "Up Next" list on the "Watch Now" tab lacks any way to "View Details" for an item or "Remove [an item] from Up Next". Again, we have to search for each title by name to view details and we have to toggle "In Up Next" to remove an item from the Up Next list.

I installed 10.15.3 last week and like everyone, tried immediately with no results. Saw these posts yesterday and was hopeful, flipped open TV on all my Macs.....still nothing. Left the app open for a few hours....nothing. I have 3500 purchased films and 250 purchased TV series, so hopefully it will still happen, but still disappointed. :-(
