Since installing Catalina yesterday, multiple crashes from userspace watchdog timeout

Since I installed Catalina yesterday, I have had around five crashes with the error:

panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff7f8879cad5): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.WindowServer in 140 seconds

Any solutions. iMac Pro had been operating fine before update. Only apps running at the time were Chrome and TimeMachine backing up to a Drobo 5N2 (plus of course background apps like Google Backup and Sync, Dropbox, etc).

This happens to me reliably when i have an external monitor connected though a docking station and system is idle. If i have a video or other non static content displaying on the external monitor, my MacBook Pro I9 does not crash. This is new for Catalina and same configuration did not crash on Mojave. Need a fix...

I worked the entire day Yesterday with multiple USB-C devices plugged-in (iPad, iPhone, hard drives) without any problems at all.

This morning I open my sleeping MBP, plugged my external Hard drive, and it crashed.

I do not know which chain of event is provoking it but I think we should just wait for 10.15.1 and hope it solves it because it seems difficult to understand what is causing what...

I have starting having kernel panics after the last update to Catalina. I'm on a Macbook Pro (retina, 15inch, Mid 2015), running 10.15.1 (19B77a). The panics seem to happen when I'm away from my machine. I have had a couple of system freezes while actively using the machine, which required a reboot, but I had chrome open with a lot of tabs, so I attributed that to Chrome.

When the panics happen, there are no external devices connected.

I have seen this one several times (note, I do not have a USB card reader)

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff801ca279d7): "com_apple_driver_AppleUSBCardReaderInterfaceNub::setPowerState(0xffffff805488dc00

and then this morning I saw:

panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff7f8b6edad5): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.WindowServer in 140 seconds

which led me to this post.

As I type this, I see the notification that there is an update waiting, so I will be installing that in a few minutes, and I will try to remember to come back here with an update after.

I ran the update this morning. I don't recall how long it took, so let's call it 9am (one hour after my original post). It is 3pm now, and I have not had any panics or reboots.

I am now on 10.15.1 (19B86a). I have not had a chance to put it to work (with Chrome and all), so I will continue to play with it, and reply here again if I have any more issues.

Hey Cooter 1234,

Thanks for your suggestion but I have already tried many times everything : fresh reinstall, NVRAM reset, SMC Reset, cmd+R and disk utility ...

It does not change, and giving all the testimonies in this thread seems to be due to some app creating chaotic behavior with Catalina, maybe due to the mandatory 64 bits.

I just identified that in my case the app Intel Power Gadget seems to be a common factor in all my crashes.

I just upgraded to 10.15.1 have CalDigit with 2 external 4k monitors. Get up walk away for a few minutes, crashes. If I wait long enough I come back to a login screen requiring password after a restart. If I catch it this is the progression: Cursor is unable to click anything. Cursor Freezes. Fan spins up hard. Restarts.

Happening very frequently since 10.15 upgrade. I will try putting it to sleep on purpose until this is fixed. Very frustrated with support as I know they know something is up yet they try to run you through all the boilerplate diagnosis to figure out the "user caused" issue. How about stop putting out crap software. RIP Jobs I know you're turning in your grave right now.

I'm on macOS 10.15 (19A602), I believe a second patch is currently rolling out which I haven't seen pushed to my machine yet. I'm on a CalDigit with 2 external 4k monitors also. I've had the same idle crashes as well as a few in use crashes where the mouse cursor will still move but everything is essentially locked and I have to power cycle. I started digging in down the 32bit app rabbit whole. AWS workdocs app was showing up in the crash report. I pulled down a fresh install of that from Amazon, and also I still had caffeine running which is 32bit. I had some old Epson scan software (32bit) that wasn't running but still sitting in applications folder. After removing caffeine and 32 epson software and downloading new instance of AWS app, I've been stable for 2 days now (I cringe even saying that but hope it persists). I'm not sure which of these helped but I'd venture to guess it was 32bit caffeine app that is clearly no longer supported on Catalina. Hope that helps.

Apple, About this Mac, System Report, scroll down to applications under the Software section, and then I sorted by the "Obtained from" column and clicked on each app that wasn't an apple app. There's a kind field that designates if its 32-bit, 64-bit, or both. Some of the websites say there's a kind column you can look at in the system report but I only four columns "Application Name, Version, Obtained from, and Last Modified. So I just clicked on each app and looked at the details
