Since installing Catalina yesterday, multiple crashes from userspace watchdog timeout

Since I installed Catalina yesterday, I have had around five crashes with the error:

panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff7f8879cad5): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.WindowServer in 140 seconds

Any solutions. iMac Pro had been operating fine before update. Only apps running at the time were Chrome and TimeMachine backing up to a Drobo 5N2 (plus of course background apps like Google Backup and Sync, Dropbox, etc).

This happens to me reliably when i have an external monitor connected though a docking station and system is idle. If i have a video or other non static content displaying on the external monitor, my MacBook Pro I9 does not crash. This is new for Catalina and same configuration did not crash on Mojave. Need a fix...

May I suggest that the 32 bit apps can be found in the Legacy Software section in the Mac's report. Acrobat in your screenshot may just need an update to run smoothly in macOS Catalina.

The best way to see if the problems come from an app that is a complementary 32/64 bit runner, is to make a second administrator account (note these apps are not marked incompatible in Applications). After that, logout from your initial admin account and login with the new account. I'll bet you won't be seeing the errors and crashes anymore.

Once logged in with the new account, identify all apps that are from Identified Developer including those labeled as Dowloaded From Internet and check to see if there are any updates available for them online. Some third party apps fail to update or upgrade properly after macOS Catalina upgrade. However, if an app does not have update available to run on macOS Catalina, it is preferred to be uninstalled - just visit app developer's page to find out how the app can be properly removed or, deinstalled.

Same problem here.

Macbook pro 15' 2014, 16GB, 1TB ssd.

Computer hangs with a unresponsive beach ball, then restarts itself and the error report says problems with Watchdog.

This happens to me since I installed the second Catalina OS update (10.15.1). I can force this to happen by launching a high CPU consuming python process from terminal. It hangs after about one hour of processing if unattended (with jolt of caffeine enabled to avoid auto sleep). When using the mac simultaneously with the process, the hang is less predictable, but it happens eventually. Once a day at least. The symptoms are the same: unresponsive beach ball, touchpad movement responsive for a while (no left or right buttons working), then loss of movement and I have to force restart.

I've just unistalled a cpu temperature monitor, because while running this process temperature always elevates and maybe this fun control program has something to to with the hanging. Still trying to learn exact symptoms. In my case only the laptop monitor. Never saw this problem by using monitor + apple TV mirroring.

I had two 4k monitors attached to a CalDigit, I did go through and uninstall the 32 bit apps and it seemed to help. But now it's back. I'd be curious what type of connection did your second monitor have.

My setup is this: 1 4K through USB-C on Caldigit Port Hub plugged into the USB-C on the macbook pro 15". A second 4K using display port ( doesn't have USB-C) plugged into the Caldigit Hub as well. And then I usually have my laptop open using that monitor on a side laptop stand. So three in total.

Since unplugging the 4k with the Display Port and just using the laptop monitor and the usb-c 4k monitor i don't seem to have the issue anymore.

Thoughts?

I have had this in my iMac 2017, retina 5k, 3.4 GHz. No attachments except printer which is off and external Bose speaker which i have connected for years. This crashes started soon after Catalina (currently 10.15.1). My wife notes it 2-3 times per week when waking the computer in the morning, first thing. Called apple. They suggested safe mode reboot. Still happens. Suggested reinstalling macOS. Have not done that yet. They then suggested that it could be hardware?. Annoying.

here are 2 samples of the reports in the last week:
