Some solutions seem to work for some, others for others, and some still not at all. After several frustrating sessions of none of the solutions working for me in trying to pair 6-gen iPad with my 2017 MacBook Pro, I got a very helpful online connection with Apple support. He walked me through several tries at rechecking login, Apple-account status, etc: none worked. Finally he led me to check my settings in the user dialog: go to your login icon or name, on the drop down select "Users and Groups Preferences." On your main user page, the primary view is "password," change password. BUT click on the other button, "login items." I had two or three items show up (including a VPN auto-run item). Deleted all of these, and (after two days and several hours of trying) connected right away to the iPad under Airplay Display in monitor setting.
