Why are a number of years of Photos that are on my iMac not appearing in icloud. Photos before and after the missing ones are there and being seen on my iPhone and iPad.

You're referring to photos that are in your Photos library, right?
Could they be hidden? Create a smart album with the criteria "Photo is hidden".
Could they be referent image file? Create a smart album with the Criteria "Photo is referenced".
