iMac keeps crashing after Catalina upgrade

I have a 2019 iMac (Core i9, 64GB of RAM, Radeon Pro Vega 48, 2TB SSD) that I upgraded to Catalina. I thought everything was working fine until I stepped away from my computer for about half an hour and came back to the log in screen; upon logging in, it said my computer had restarted. Submitted the crash report to Apple. I thought it was a glitch. Kept working, then later on, same thing happened. Stepped away, and came back to the same thing. Submitted the crash report to Apple again. Then it happened again. And again. And again. Today, same thing; computer keeps crashing, over and over and over.

I've changed nothing in terms of hardware or software between yesterday and today (or since I set up this iMac a few months ago), except for upgrading to Catalina. Under Mojave, there were no issues.

If anyone has any idea how to resolve this, that would be greatly appreciated!

Below is one of the many, many crash reports, but they all look similar in terms of it seeming to be related to com.apple.WindowServer:

I have the same problem. I'm using MacBook Air 2016. After I successfully installed macOS Catalina yesterday, I restarted my Mac but found the Mac stuck on the loading bar and won't turn on. I have entered into Recovery Mode and checked the startup disk with Disk Utility's First Aid. However, no error found during the process. Then I follow this tutorial to downgrade from Catalina to Mojave: https://iboysoft.com/mac-data-recovery/downgrade-from-macos-catalina.html, everything works well. I guess it is possible that my Mac is not compatible with macOS 10.15.

So interestingly, I got three phone calls from Apple within the span of three minutes this evening. Got one voicemail saying that it was Apple calling about the issue I had posted about here. I was told that the best way to get in contact would be via an email he was going to send right away, but of course, never got an email. 🤨🙄 Guess I shouldn't be surprised that I don't get an email when they say they're going to send an email if they let a bug this big slip through testing...?

Hi, thanks for your reply. Oh sorry, I typed the version wrongly, my computer is 13 inch MacBook Air 2017, haha.... Yes, I have read the official macOS Catalina compatibility. Technically, my computer is compatible with macOS Catalina. I have no idea why my Mac won't boot after update Catalina, but after I downgraded to Mojave, everything works OK.

I can't agree more that as a new operating system, there may be some bugs. Hope Apple can fix them ASAP.

I have a Macbook pro 13'' early 2015 and the upgrade is a total disaster. After facing the issue of stacking in the screen "setting up" your mac for some hours, I reboot using the button on my MacBook. And then what a surprise: Catalina auto restarts every 3'. Just to mention that using the MacBook without an external Monitor i am facing the same issue. Bluetooth connection also unstable since it looks like the Magic mouse is connected but it is not....

Second day in my business and I can't work....

Debasser, not quite a short-term solution. I have already turned off automatic switching of the graphics cards. I too thought it helped solved it then the issue kicked in every time I stepped away and allowed the computer to sleep on it's own.

I can confirm, when I manually locking the computer allowing it to sleep from there by making the request in the Apple Logo (or by pressing control+cmd+q), I am able to wake my computer just fine after 1 or 2 hours.

The issue comes up, with my monitors connected, when I allow my computer to sleep on it's own, then about 15-20 minutes later it crashes and restarts on the wake.

Come on Apple! I'm about ready to put on a skirt and become your next NFL cheerleader on this fix. Being a man, I'm sure this view will be encouraging for you to quickly find a solution.

Same here. Apps are crashing constantly, and the system will crash as well. I reinstalled Catalina, booted into Recovery and ran Disk First Aid, and even installed on an external drive and migrated the system over to it, and I still see the same behavior.

Safari crashes (usually) after I open it and start to type into the search/location bar.

Notes closes once I start typing.

Even Spotlight search (CMD-space) disappears as soon as I start typing into it.

I tried to run Disk First Aid on the internal drive (when booted from external). It showed a disk error that it presumably fixed, then completed successfully. Tried to run it again, and got the same error, with some additional ones. Then tried a third time and the whole system went black and restarted.

Would have restored the previous OS from a backup, but my backups haven't been mounting since the upgrade. :-/

One thing that may be related to other users reports that it could be video card driver related; when in Boot Camp, Windows Update tried to update the video card driver. It said there was an update, then said everything was updated, then said there was an update when I checked again, endlessly.
