iMac keeps crashing after Catalina upgrade

I have a 2019 iMac (Core i9, 64GB of RAM, Radeon Pro Vega 48, 2TB SSD) that I upgraded to Catalina. I thought everything was working fine until I stepped away from my computer for about half an hour and came back to the log in screen; upon logging in, it said my computer had restarted. Submitted the crash report to Apple. I thought it was a glitch. Kept working, then later on, same thing happened. Stepped away, and came back to the same thing. Submitted the crash report to Apple again. Then it happened again. And again. And again. Today, same thing; computer keeps crashing, over and over and over.

I've changed nothing in terms of hardware or software between yesterday and today (or since I set up this iMac a few months ago), except for upgrading to Catalina. Under Mojave, there were no issues.

If anyone has any idea how to resolve this, that would be greatly appreciated!

Below is one of the many, many crash reports, but they all look similar in terms of it seeming to be related to com.apple.WindowServer:

just wanted to add my voice to this, same thing is happening with me. The only external monitor I have connected is an old thunderbolt apple monitor. I haven't experienced the crashing during any specific activity, it only seems to be happening when the computer goes to sleep (I basically don't realize it has crashed until trying to wake it up). I do get the "your computer restarted because of a problem" error and submit the crash logs accordingly.

until it's solved I guess I'll be relying on the 10+ year old caffeine app to keep it awake? fantastic.

As a long time Mac and Apple user from the early 1980’s I have learned to NEVER download any new OS Z from Apple. Why? Apple, much like Microsoft, fails in any ore-launch testing throughly of a new system. So, we, the users are the “test subjects” and soon after, a update is released to fix the issues. Good example is the newest IOS put out for the iPhone, which was a disaster and within 24 hours, Splle put out a new update

dtay on the old system and be patient until Apple gets the bugs out. Why go through this aggravation when you don’t have to?

I have the same problem every time I put my computer to sleep and walk away from it. It just says that the computer unexpectedly quit and restarted etc (like your message above). After the last occurrence my Bluetooth switched off.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)

3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

AMD Radeon R9 M390 2 GB

I am hoping that if I post here, that Apple brings out a fix soon as there were no issues in Mojave.

Im hoping that

I am also having this problem. I have the:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019)

2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel i9

32 GB Memory

Radeon Pro Vega 20 4 GB

Intel UDH Graphics

I have two 27" 4K monitors connected to the USB-C ports.

Every time I walk away from my computer for a while when I come back it has powered off and when I turn it back on I have the message "your computer restarted because of a problem".

I'm hoping that by posting here that this will be fixed sooner!

My computer is set to never go to sleep, so I don't think it's a sleep issue; I think it's a whenever the computer idles below a certain point. I even tried setting my computer to never sleep and for the displays to never turn off, but that didn't do anything. The only saving grace is that the computer hasn't restarted while I've been actively using it.

I'm having the same problem. Regular reboots, typically with "panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f8fd9ca8d): watchdog timeout: no checkins from watchdogd in 92 seconds (174 total checkins since monitoring last enabled)" on first line of crash report.

Especially if walking away from desk leaving laptop unused for a few minutes, but also occurs when laptop is in use (but less frequently).

Machine: MacBook Retina Air 2018, usually hooked up to an external Thunderbolt display.

Sidenote: the "Report problem to Apple" that appears after reboot is sometimes extremely unresponsive with the spinning disc cursor staying there forever.

My MacBook Pro constantly crashes and shuts down since I loaded Catalina. Sometimes the screen just freezes entirely and I have to shut down. Other times I'll step away from my computer and come back to find it having shut itself down completely.

All last night I thought it was a problem with Photos, as it seemed to only happen when I had that program open. Photos was trying to download all my pics from the cloud and would only work for so long before the computer would crash. However, I do not have photos open, and my computer just did the same thing just now.

Catalina has been a major pain to deal with, and I regret loading the new OS.

Same deal. 2019 MBP with Vega20 and 2x LG 4K monitors.

I haven't seen the issue with 1 external screen attached. Only with 2.

Restored my last Time Machine backup before I upgraded to Catalina 👍🏼

EDIT: While I've definitely seen the log you've shared, I've actually seen 2-3 different panics. Reported all of them and sent them in to Apple Support.

I've found doing a safe boot at least allows me to use my computer without the crashing, so I can debug things. (hold down shift key while restarting)

Makes me suspect it's one of the programs that loads on startup. I'm going to try turning off Moom, which resizes windows, given the original poster's mention of "Windows Manager".

Computer: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15 inch, Late 2013), 2.6 i7, 16gb ram, graphics: NVIDIA GeoForce GT 750 M & Intel Iris Pro.

macOS Catalina
Version 10.15

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019)
Processor 3.7 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5
Memory 40 GB 2667 MHz DDR4
Graphics Radeon Pro 580X 8 GB

(No external monitor)

I was able to reduce crashes by viewing the Console > Crash Reports and noticed PenTabletDriver and WacomTabletDriver, were crashing every couple of minutes. I never used this device (someone else had set it up) so I found out how to remove it and it's helped, but general lockups and crashing still occur.

Just wanted to put that out there to view [Command + Space] > "Console" > [Return] > (click) "Crash Reports" and view what's in there. May give you some insight into what's transpiring.

A lot of my Adobe Creative Suite apps have been crashing, like Adobe Lightroom CC and Adobe Premiere Rush (includng AdobeIPCBroker, Adobe CEF Helper) and they're fully locking up the machine with,

EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL)
EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)
EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) -> KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at ____

So I will just have to wait for Adobe to fix those apps before I can have a productive day I guess...

Same issue. This is nearly as craptastic as Windows ME was.

I'm running:

iMac 27" retina 5k

4.2GHZ Quad-Core I7

48 GB 2400 MHZ DDR4

Radeon Pro 580 8GB

I am able to load into safe mode only. Everytime I log into the system like normal it gets to the os screen for like 15 seconds, freezes then reboots. I'm at the point I really wish I could just go back to Mojave but some moron (me) forgot to set up Time Machine.

I talked to Apple and went through all the hoops only to have NO RESULTS. I really feel like it's a Graphics card issue because of how the system acted when Apple tech logged into my system and the whole thing just slogged down to a sloths pace.

Let's git r done Apple, you made the mess now fix it.

exact same issue with my iMac Pro fully loaded

iMac Pro (2018)  CPU: Intel Xeon W-2191B (36 Threads, 18 Cores) @ 2.30 GHz  Memory: 128.00 GB  Uptime: 37 minutes  Disk Space: 2.00 TB  Graphics: Radeon Pro Vega 64  Display Resolution: 5120 x 2880  OS: macOS Catalina (Version 10.15, Build 19A583)

And With my 2018 Macbook Pro fully loaded

Model: MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)  CPU: Intel Core i9-8950HK (12 Threads, 6 Cores) @ 2.90 GHz  Memory: 32.00 GB  Uptime: 2 days  Disk Space: 1.00 TB  Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 630, Radeon Pro Vega 20  Display Resolution: 3360 x 2100  OS: macOS Catalina (Version 10.15, Build 19A583)

displays i use are the 49” Super Ultra-Wide Dual QHD 32:9 monitor from Samsung Modle# LC49RG90SSNXZA

i basically spent over $22,000 on these two devices and anytime I plug-in an external display to them I cannot in any way shape or form use them in my professional workflow. this was happening intermittently prior to the update to Catalina but as of now it is a complete disaster, I can almost never let my computer idle without it effectively rebooting on me Mid work-flow

I have two 1 month old MacMinis and the exact same problem on both machines and each have crashed for no reason (and without any intense processing being performed) at least 6 times each of the last 2 days since upgrading. I have deleted Chrome, given full disk access to Google File Stream and other steps that I have read may help. This seems to be a wide spread problem with Catalina. Apple should be in a wide spread panic to get this chronic problem fixed. With the butterfly keyboard problems and screen problems on MacBooks a few years ago, I have lost a lot of confidence in Apple hardware / software. I bought a Pixelbook as my laptop to reduce the stress of dealing with chronic problems in Apple laptops.
