iMac keeps crashing after Catalina upgrade

I have a 2019 iMac (Core i9, 64GB of RAM, Radeon Pro Vega 48, 2TB SSD) that I upgraded to Catalina. I thought everything was working fine until I stepped away from my computer for about half an hour and came back to the log in screen; upon logging in, it said my computer had restarted. Submitted the crash report to Apple. I thought it was a glitch. Kept working, then later on, same thing happened. Stepped away, and came back to the same thing. Submitted the crash report to Apple again. Then it happened again. And again. And again. Today, same thing; computer keeps crashing, over and over and over.

I've changed nothing in terms of hardware or software between yesterday and today (or since I set up this iMac a few months ago), except for upgrading to Catalina. Under Mojave, there were no issues.

If anyone has any idea how to resolve this, that would be greatly appreciated!

Below is one of the many, many crash reports, but they all look similar in terms of it seeming to be related to com.apple.WindowServer:

Well, chuckin’ McNuggets. I can’t even get into recovery mode now. It’s booting to an Internet Recovery screen that I have no mouse control in and the keyboard is totally slow as molasses, barely responding.

I’ve been fixing, building and servicing Windows hardware for the past 20 years. I’ve never NOT been able to refresh an OS with complete control over all of the components related therein.

This iMac is unsalvageable at this point.

I believe the desktop market and creatively based power user is just something that the industry is losing respect for.

There are a ton of people that still use a desktop as a critical vehicle for intense computer based artistic output in any number of industries or mediums.

The iPhone and iPad is not a tool for such endeavors. But it seems our methodology of creative output is being stifled and redirected towards a mobile dominated mindset. The mobile platform has no place in extreme digital artistic output that requires the fundamental tools of the trade, a mouse and a keyboard.

My Asus desktop has Windows 10 and been rock solid for 4 years now. I bought an HP workstation off Amazon in August with 128GB RAM for $1300 and its fast and flawless. I pray to God that I could use GarageBand or Logic on it now that my iMac is totally dead. How amazing would that be to have GB and Logic on Windows with 128GB RAM behind smoking fast hardware.

I bought the iMac because I wanted a workstation to learn GarageBand and Logic to record music or other audio adventures.

I am saddened that the Catalina upgrade has totally destroyed those simple ambitions.

I have a $2500 paperweight.

I bought Apple stock a few years ago at $142. I feel the 280 share price today does not reflect any kind of earned valuation with such a horrifically unkind stab in my back along with the obliteration and eventual devastation forthcoming; the death of the desktop market.

Is there GarageBand or Logic for Windows?

Ok, so I had AppleCare and the store gave me a new drive. What I don’t understand is I used to have a 120GB SSD drive as my primary and now I get the iMac back and it has totally confusing details. Why are Mac’s so obtuse? Why does “about this Mac” show one drive but the disk utility shows two? Can someone fell me what is going on here?

did my iMac originally come with a 120gb SSD? And they replaced it? How many physical drives do I REALLY have? Why is this so difficult? Or am I being a stubborn windows guy? I just don’t get it.

So do I have two physical drives or one 4gb with 2 partitions? Why does storage about his Mac show only one 2tb fusion drive? But other screens show 4tb?

Just checking back in for the third time on this issue happening to BOTH of my iMac Pros. Still no solve and it continues to happen, losing valuable work this is insane- unlike previous years when random crashes would happen, Photoshop can't even recover the work lost.

The only NEW info I have is that for the first time, after one recent restart on one of the machines, i submitted the usual crash log and then immediately after, the attached window popped up specifying a sleep/ wake error. That primarily seems to happen on one of the two machines- the other one is used more heavily and its crashing in the middle of working on it, so i know the sleep issue isn't the exact culprit, but this the first new bit of evidence i've gotten since this first started.

APPLE- HELP

Crash 4 of the morning just today. Like others I used to use my computer for other things than web browsing. Like finances. Luckily for me my phone still works. IT won’t even stay running long enough for me to search for a solution without beach balling and restarting. Seriously though I was about to upgrade from my MBP to an iMac Pro but now am looking at PC as my Mac is just a pretty paperweight.

On a side note I’ve tweeted Apple and even been to the Apple store just to make sure it wasn’t a hardware issue.

Ok, I'll try safe mode shortly (although this has been happening since I got everything replaced too).

How frequently do you think it should be rebooted, interested to understand this because I've used Mac for many years, but when I moved over from a PC, one of the good things was that there was no expectation to keep rebooting to 'keep it fresh' like there used to be with Windows.

Yep, had that latest LastPass version - just used AppCleaner to uninstall it which has removed the app and the Safari extension.

I don't have much in login items anyway?

I've had the same problem. I got a 2019 Imac and i upgraded the ram with OWC ram off Amazon. I thought maybe that is the issue, but apparently its happening to everyone. If i'm working on my computer, then everything is fine. Its just if I stop using it for like 5-10mins then all of a sudden its frozen and I cant do anything. Then it will reboot and show me this Image(see attached) saying its restarted. The first 2 weeks of having this I didnt notice any problems, now its all the time. Not sure if its the Ram upgrade since it wasnt apple manufactured ram. But I just want this to stop.

Guys,

I had struggled for any actions in order to fix this problem according to you guys provided(reset nvram smc, deleted kext files, safe mode, reinstall Catalina, gmset hibernate and sleep parameters, shutdown bluetooth awake, shut down power nap etc.) those are not work for me, I still encountered power drain at night, and restarts randomly, quite annoying and don't want to keep up trying any other ways till today I installed 10.15.4 beta, seems it sleep and awake normal now with power adapt connected which it failed before, I am still testing if this patch is a fix.

Mine is MacBook Pro 16 inch from Dec 2019.

Hopefully Apple will issue a new Radeon Pro Vega driver that will fix the issue for us. Sooner rather than later, ideally. If it were that simple, that would be nice.

I still can’t believe this would have slipped past their testing. It’s not like the Radeon Pro Vega GPUs are uncommon in Apple’s current lineup...

True, I was basing my previous comment on the totally unscientific premise that three of us (so far) all have Radeon Pro Vega cards. Either way, this is a pretty serious issue that should be fixable with a software update from Apple. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Please get as many people with similar issues on here as you can! Also, submit the crash reports to Apple, in addition to feedback via their website.
