An external disk refuses to mount, com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930868.

What causes this particular error and what can I do to mount this drive or retrieve the data from it?

I ran into this issue with a Western Digital 2TB drive... I had seen some irreperable disk errors and was ironically, attempting to back the drive up so I could reformat it... so, I was panicking because I've got some important data on the drive and was starting to research data recovery tools. After messing around and doing some research, I discovered the system was trying to run a filesystem check on it and was getting hung up.

I opened a terminal window and entered the following commands

$ ps -ef | grep fsck
$ sudo kill [pid from above]

BAM! Disk mounted just like that.

At this point, I opened Disk Utility and ran First Aid... which ironically unmounted the drive and then got hung up again... DUH! So had to repeat the process. At this point, with the drive mounted, I backed up the drive and reformatted it.

Hope this helps.

I need to try in on Linux then...i have tried all options even thinking to reformat the drive and then restore the files but then i know there is a possibility that i wont be able to rescue the files or just jpg files will be rescued (i want my RAW files) paying to fix my drive is not an option.. frustrating and thinking it has something to do with Seagate wanting more cases to fix with the pixel8. Or apple not supporting seagate older drives. Just so many theories!

Initiate Terminal mode.

At prompt, key first command and hit return/enter:

[user]$ ps -ef | grep fsck

You should see something like the following, the first three bytes from which is the PID:

  501   680   653   0  2:55PM ttys000    0:00.00 grep fsck

...Now at the prompt, you key the second command with the applicable PID:

[user]$ sudo kill 501

It might work for you (I hope it does). It did not solve my issue, and tainted disk still won't mount and I continue to see the same error as OP.

Hello mhicks,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand from the information you provided that you're unable mount an external drive; I'd like to help.

First, make sure your drive is formatted so it can be read by macOS:

File system formats available in Disk Utility on Mac

The following support article provides some troubleshooting steps to try for external drive issues:

Hope this helps.

Best Regards.

Hello, You sent your thanks to the wrong person by accident. I am not @torgash, I am camionneur88. I did post a solution to this problem as well which is different from @torgash's. I am glad you resolved your issue. I received this error from a different reason (creating a ubuntu boot disk). Working through the offered solutions on this subject it seems that any number of things may cause this problem. Have a nice day & stay well.

Thanks mate.

this worked.

seems like disk repairing was running in background. When i killed the task a msg popped up - mac os can’t repair the disk but you still can read and write the data into disk and it mounted.

however. Everyone reading this please make sure you safely remove your external drive every time.

this caused me a failure of seagate hdd and Seagate couldn’t retrieve the data 🙁

This isn't responsive to the issue. Those reporting this problem have not changed their external disk drive configuration; what has changed is Catalina or an update within Catalina. i have the same issue, repeated questions to the community have not resulted in answers. A trip to the Genius Bar resulted in my machine being tested, declared to be OK hardware wise, and returned to me wiped with a four generations-old operating system installed and a split Fusion configuration that I had to fix. There's a problem here, and Apple needs to recognize it and develop a fix.

I had the same issue on Big Sur after turning of an external hard drive without ejecting first. I have an external hard drive with several partitions and only one was affected by the error com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930868

I opened disk utility selected the unmounted partition and ran First Aid on it. It took a few minutes and then I could press mount and it mounted it again just fine.

Hope this helps someone.

So it's day 187 since I my 12tb raid 5 array failed to mount. Today is the day that I was finally able to retrieve my data!!! I've momentarily stepped away from the strippers and the 5 kegger raging celebration that I'm having in order to write this post. So over the last few months I've tried everything that I've found in here as well as various other failed means and methods. I've tried a variety of terminal commands in different orders, leaving the computer and drive on for over a week. I even attempted some of the most ridiculous methods such as turning things on and off in a certain order. I've killed the .fsck process..tried the drive on multiple versions of OS X (I run dual boots and have old old Macs laying around, like Sierra, Yosemite old) hmm what else? I think that covers it although I may be forgetting a few things. So how did I do it you ask? Well I recently picked up a Qnap tvsx72xt box. This is NOT an advertisement and it was an accidental and very costly solution. So The box comes with it's own linux based qts4 operating system and you can hook up a keyboard, display and mouse to it or work it remotely over your network. You can plug drives directly into the box and offload them. So after migrating close to 60TB of media over the course of several weeks I was down to my unmountable 12tb raid 5 array. I plugged it in expecting nothing to happen and boom It shows up as an external mounted drive inside of the Qnap file station app. I'm able to pull all of the media from the once unmountable drive and ingest it into the Qnap box. An expensive and happy accident as far as a solution goes but yeah I got my stuff back. I'll still follow this post out of sheer curiosity as to how large it will grow and how much time will pass before apple acknowledges it. If it isn't fixed with Big Sur I doubt it ever will be. Just wanted to thank everyone for all of the information as well their unrelenting tenacity in search of a resolution for this issue. You can't f__k with people's ability to access their data and then just sit on your hands APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!
