black screen in Catalina

I'm suffering from a black screen on my MacBook Pro after every sleep event.

Only way out is to hit the off button and restart every single time.

Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks

Well everyone, if you need the solution, it's possible. It's just worst-case scenario.

I can confirm that IF YOU HAVE A CURRENT TIME MACHINE BACKUP from pre-Catalina install, this problem can be fixed by doing a clean install of macOS 10.15 Catalina on a freshly formatted drive. This requires you to install macOS 10.15, set up the machine as a new computer, and then use Migration Assistant to transfer your old user data back into your machine. To follow this process:

  1. Make sure you have a working Time Machine backup from before your macOS Catalina install - DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU DON'T, or you will lose your data
  2. Boot into recovery mode by powering on the machine and holding Command ⌘ + R
  3. Use Disk Utility in Recovery Mode to reformat (erase) your system ("Macintosh HD", or whatever you named it) drive or the container that hosts the system drive and "data" drive.
  4. Select the appropriate file format for your machine's needs (seek other articles to find this out)
  5. Close Disk Utility after complete, and use the "Reinstall macOS" feature of Recovery Mode to reinstall 10.15
  6. Allow the process to complete
  7. Set up the machine as if it were a brand new device - don't transfer your data in this process
  8. Verify that your new install of macOS 10.15 Catalina is no longer exhibiting the wake/sleep issues
  9. Use Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder to transfer your user data back from your Time Machine backup to your fresh install of macOS - OR, if you prefer, take this opportunity to start "fresh" and only transfer back the specific data that you think you'd like to keep.

This is the most complete and time consuming way this could be resolved, but the issue has been solved for me. It must be caused by some sort of user-land kext or daemon, or something that is changed by performing a clean macOS 10.15 install and then transferring your user data.

NOTE: Only do this is you had the forethought to have a working and complete backup with Time Machine prior to installing macOS Catalina. I cannot stress this enough if you are new at this...

Good luck, and godspeed!

Everybody who has marked this issue as solved in other posts later posted that it wasn't solved. I've wasted hours trying every suggestion to fix this issue (reinstalling Catalina, resetting SMC and NVRAM, starting in safe mode, etc), all to no avail. Hopefully a bug fix comes out to address this soon otherwise abandon all hope.

Today I don't see getting around acknowledging that never letting my display go to sleep may shorten its life. Can't be much worse then just hard powering down my Mac with a handful of open apps. I guess if you walk away long enough to let your monitor go to sleep, you don't care what you come back to... Let's get this fixed MacOS Developer Teams, clearly a reported issue.

Yeah I certainly hope there is a fix soon, as the hard reset every time the screen is just risky and definitely not a long term solution. I was always worried about data corruption if I do a hard reset - just had to do a hard reset, and when my MBP boots up it gets stuck at the Apple Logo with the progress bar reaching the end (i.e. 100%) but my MBP is still not showing the login screen - have been like this for 5 minutes now so I’m kind of worried.

Hopefully Apple comes up with a fix soon.

I have the same issue, also when connected to 3 external monitors, I cannot get an image on one... when I close MacBook Pro lid I do get the 3rd external monitor to work, but since there is a forced sleep them wake up that happens, I can never use it as the hard lock requires a hard reboot. turning off sleep abilities is NOT a resolution for this... curing the symptoms of an issue simply mask the problem they do not solve for root....

Welp, guess Chrome isn't the solution.

This is also after my Mac coming back from a licensed Apple Repair shop and they still couldn't resolve the issue. They replaced my entire battery and front panel (not related to this) and still no solution. Reset all the same things mentioned and chimed that they believe it to be a software issue.

Not sure but there is a bug in this software that I am hoping someone is working late to have a fix. Give them a beer when they do.

I have to do the same thing too - turns out the MCTTriggerGraphics.plugin and Trigger5Core.kext are the culprit, and I can even put them back after restarting - the moment I put the back the issue came back.

I remembered at some stage I used a USB Video Graphics adapter from j5create and must have installed one of their drivers then. A search on their website indicated that their Mac drivers are not fully compatible with Catalina yet and they are asking people to delay upgrading to Catalina.

As I don't use either of those devices now I am happy to remove those drivers.

Hopefully my MBP would now stay this way and all will be OK...

Thank you to whoever found this solution/workaround.

I'm experiencing another issue related to Display.

I own a MacBook Pro 2019, and attached an external monitor via USB-C. When I first attached it in my MacBook (Mojave) it worked like a charm, then I upgraded to Catalina and experienced the black screen. Now I downgraded to Mojave and the black screen stoped but when my Mac return from sleep, the resolution in external monitor is completely messed, something like 1280 x 720, then I have to open the lid of my Mac and close it again to return to best resolution.

My external monitor is a Dell P2719C, whom used to work very well.

What is 5G technology is quite simply put, a modern breakthrough in communication technology. Not only does 5G brings speed improvements over 4G, but it is also expected to unleash immense internet of things (IoT) potential throughout the

cost.
