iTunes giving error duration too long when trying to transfer ringtones

I'm trying to create a ringtone in iTunes, and even though I trim it as I'm supposed to, and it shows that it's 4 seconds long, when I try to drag it to tones it gives me that error. I've looked at this link: Create and manage ringtones in iTunes - Apple Community, I've tried Apple's support page, nothing works. Any ideas?

OK, I found a (wacky) solution:

Select iTunes > Preferences > General.

In the Import Settings window, go to the the Setting dropdown. (Note which setting is currently selected so you can go back at the end of this process and restore it to your original choice if you prefer.)

Select High Quality (128 kbps) from the menu, and then select OK.

Make sure you also have AAC selected as the import format, if it isn't already.

I had iTunes Plus selected, and once I changed it the ringtones worked. A couple things that I ran in to:

1.) I have to trim the file THEN convert to .AAC. I tried converting first and I got no joy.

2.) I tried to create two different tones from the same file and I couldn't. I had to create one, delete the files, import the .mp3 again and start over.

Anyway, hopes this helps someone...right as Apple has removed iTunes!

If you had followed the advice as given exactly in that user tip then you would have selected the correct format and trimmed the file before converting it. Setting start and end points doesn't change the audio data, but when you create a new copy of a track using the convert format tool only the active portion of the track is used for the new file. There is also a note that on Mac computers you must removed the converted file from iTunes before attempting to add it to your device. You can create more than one tone from a given source file, but the output filenames/paths should be unique when adding to the device or one will overwrite the other.

I've yet to test adding a custom tone to a device using Finder but I assume the process should be roughly the same.
