Catalina Kernel Panic

My 2018 MBP keeps having a kernel panic every time it starts the screen saver. It reboots itself and notifies me that it recovered from a serious error. Anyone else having the same problem? If so, how did you fix it?

when did Apple fix this?

Dec 2, 2019 4:40 AM in response to moldv

Same as the above, i.e. kernel panic with com.apple.kext.AMDRadeonX4000(3.0.2) in the middle. Had it three times in the past week or so, twice while the MacBook Pro was sleeping, once while working (typing text in a terminal).

I'm using an external 4K Samsung display on Thunderbolt. I've noticed that the support of external displays and sleeping gets more and more flaky as time goes by. Notably, every time the computer goes to sleep, it's as if the external display was removed and re-connected. All windows move around for a while, re-adjusting to the new resolution. This is especially annoying with XQuartz, which has its own window-manager mimicking macOS, but does not deal with this situation gracefully at all. Typically, it ends up moving windows off-screen, and it's really annoying to pull them all back on screen.

2015 MPB here, same thing happening. Thought it was just because I did the upgrade. Clean installed Catalina without restoring from time machine, same thing is happening. Ran diagnostic, everything came out okay. Ran first aid on ssd, everything ok. There's other odd behavior as well - for example shutting down can take several minutes, until it finally crashes. When I start up it says it has recovered from a crash.

Curious if anyone has tried turning off Handoff?

( System Preferences > General > Allow Handoff between the Mac and your iCloud devices )

I remember having an issue with Mojave (I don't remember what the specific issue was, unfortunately...) but the solution was to turn off Handoff...

When I upgraded to Catalina though, one of the steps for setting up Sidecar to use with my iPad Pro was to make sure Handoff was turned on... So, I took a chance -- hoping that Apple had fixed whatever problem it was that I was having -- and turned Handoff back on...

It dawned on me earlier today that perhaps there is still some kind of issue with Handoff, so I just turned it back off. Then I left my computer for a bit, and for the first time since I upgraded to Catalina, there was no kernel panic when I came back! Not sure if it was a fluke, but it truly was the only time it didn't crash when it went to sleep on its own.

I'll report back if things continue to go well, or if it crashes again... Let me know if anyone else has success with this...

(Of course it will be really disappointing if it means that Sidecar won't work with the iPad then...)
