Catalina Kernel Panic

My 2018 MBP keeps having a kernel panic every time it starts the screen saver. It reboots itself and notifies me that it recovered from a serious error. Anyone else having the same problem? If so, how did you fix it?

Same problem occurred on my iMac. I solved by getting rid of the googlesoftwareupdate that was occurring constantly and hanging up my system, after that it has been running fine. Here is the information I found to do so.

Good luck.

Here is update from my usage from last 5 days. I have this kernel panic problem from the time I updated to Catalina. The problem is as follow:

1) If I don't put my laptop to sleep mode when it is unattended and the laptop goes to sleep mode automatically then it restarts with Kernel Panic

2) I am working and suddenly the Mac is not responsive nothing works and I have to restart the Mac.

So, the second problem I was facing because I was using external third party adapter to connect USBs, Charging and etc. Once I removed it I did not had the second problem.

To deal with first problem I started to put laptop on sleep mode before leaving it unattended.

Also, for a note I am using 3 displays in 4k on all the three thunderbolt ports.

Thank you, I have a similar problem. I experience a kernel panic when i open my macbook air after putting it on sleep from the office. Below you find the first part of my report, apparently depending on the usb card reader interface. I usually have only one thing connected to the usb, and it's a ethernet to usb adapter. Honestly I don't wanna think it is due to the fact it's not an apple adapter, it would be simply ridiculous. NB: i've tried with 2 different adapters, nothing changed. This is happening since the Catalina update.

Update: I removed Symantec antivirus software yesterday and its associated kexts (kernel extensions) were also removed. I also stopped Cisco AnyConnect VPN from launching at login. I have not had any kernel panics since then, even when Mac woke from sleep.

Thanks to etresoft above for mentioning that a majority of panics are due to incompatible 3rd party kernel extensions. To see third-party kexts, open a Terminal instance and run `kextstat | grep -v com.apple` -- it shows a list of kexts which might be conflicting with Catalina. So far, so good. Have not tested further by connecting to my VPN. Will try that today to see what happens.

They will be listed in most kernel panic reports too. Unfortunately, when people post kernel panic reports here on Apple Support Communities, they almost always post only the content right up to the loaded extensions, which are omitted.

Since 3rd party kernel extensions are, relatively speaking, the easiest component to remove and test, they should be removed first to see if they are the cause.

If there aren’t any 3rd party extensions loaded, then do as others have done and see if there are any 3rd party hardware devices that can be removed.

If you do all that and you still have kernel panics, then it is probably a hardware problem that can only be fixed with a repair by Apple or an Authorized Apple Service Centre.

Same as the above, i.e. kernel panic with com.apple.kext.AMDRadeonX4000(3.0.2) in the middle. Had it three times in the past week or so, twice while the MacBook Pro was sleeping, once while working (typing text in a terminal).

I'm using an external 4K Samsung display on Thunderbolt. I've noticed that the support of external displays and sleeping gets more and more flaky as time goes by. Notably, every time the computer goes to sleep, it's as if the external display was removed and re-connected. All windows move around for a while, re-adjusting to the new resolution. This is especially annoying with XQuartz, which has its own window-manager mimicking macOS, but does not deal with this situation gracefully at all. Typically, it ends up moving windows off-screen, and it's really annoying to pull them all back on screen.
