Catalina Kernel Panic

My 2018 MBP keeps having a kernel panic every time it starts the screen saver. It reboots itself and notifies me that it recovered from a serious error. Anyone else having the same problem? If so, how did you fix it?

Add me to the list. Installed Catalina last week, I have had these kernel panic crashes a couple times a day since then. Sometimes when screensaver starts, sometimes when I'm doing other stuff on the 15" MBP 2016. I just uninstalled all the apps that no longer work with Catalina, maybe that will help. Maybe a system software update will fix.

Unrelated issue, as you can see the spacebar randomly double-types on laptop keyboard, also a new problem but pre-Catalina. These butterfly keyboards are not very good.

Please DO NOT tell people not to reply with requested diagnostics. That is totally not cool!

The vast majority of kernel panics are due to incompatible 3rd party kernel extensions and hardware failures. Apple isn't going to lift a finger to solve either one. All that will happen is that the OP will sit on their hands and do nothing while panics continue to pile up and/or their warranty expires.

Here is update from my usage from last 5 days. I have this kernel panic problem from the time I updated to Catalina. The problem is as follow:

1) If I don't put my laptop to sleep mode when it is unattended and the laptop goes to sleep mode automatically then it restarts with Kernel Panic

2) I am working and suddenly the Mac is not responsive nothing works and I have to restart the Mac.

So, the second problem I was facing because I was using external third party adapter to connect USBs, Charging and etc. Once I removed it I did not had the second problem.

To deal with first problem I started to put laptop on sleep mode before leaving it unattended.

Also, for a note I am using 3 displays in 4k on all the three thunderbolt ports.

Thank you, I have a similar problem. I experience a kernel panic when i open my macbook air after putting it on sleep from the office. Below you find the first part of my report, apparently depending on the usb card reader interface. I usually have only one thing connected to the usb, and it's a ethernet to usb adapter. Honestly I don't wanna think it is due to the fact it's not an apple adapter, it would be simply ridiculous. NB: i've tried with 2 different adapters, nothing changed. This is happening since the Catalina update.

Update: I removed Symantec antivirus software yesterday and its associated kexts (kernel extensions) were also removed. I also stopped Cisco AnyConnect VPN from launching at login. I have not had any kernel panics since then, even when Mac woke from sleep.

Thanks to etresoft above for mentioning that a majority of panics are due to incompatible 3rd party kernel extensions. To see third-party kexts, open a Terminal instance and run `kextstat | grep -v com.apple` -- it shows a list of kexts which might be conflicting with Catalina. So far, so good. Have not tested further by connecting to my VPN. Will try that today to see what happens.

They will be listed in most kernel panic reports too. Unfortunately, when people post kernel panic reports here on Apple Support Communities, they almost always post only the content right up to the loaded extensions, which are omitted.

Since 3rd party kernel extensions are, relatively speaking, the easiest component to remove and test, they should be removed first to see if they are the cause.

If there aren’t any 3rd party extensions loaded, then do as others have done and see if there are any 3rd party hardware devices that can be removed.

If you do all that and you still have kernel panics, then it is probably a hardware problem that can only be fixed with a repair by Apple or an Authorized Apple Service Centre.

Hi Gluse,

Exactly the same log issue.

I don't have any USB device connected. Simply opening my macbookair from sleep and noting it has rebooted while supposed to be in sleep mode!

This is happening since the Catalina update. Not this problem with Mojave...

Did you resolve it please?

I got pounded with kernel panics, I think every few minutes, on my MacBook Pro Retina Early 2015. Can't post specific error messages because I just eventually erased and clean installed Mojave. I had put in a new OWC Aura X2 SSD (1TB) just a few days before and wondered if I had a bad SSD or Catalina didn't like it. I'm afraid I just have the one machine and couldn't afford to fight with resolving it.

Been using Macs since my Macintosh Plus and OS 6; this is not the first time I've reinstalled a system by any means but I think the first time I've actually had to downgrade in the last 30 years. :( That being said, I'm sure Catalina is the problem, as things are happy again with 10.14. Anyone know when the first dot upgrade is expected? I may throw caution to the wind and try it again.
